Advantages: 10x optical zoom, Leica lens

Disadvantages: Battery Life

Enjoying photography as a hobby, the panasonic lumix tz5 instantly appealed to me due to its compact nature, and fantastic specifications. Previously I owned an olympus C760UZ, which had a fantastic build, but didn't really do justice to the idea of a compact camera due to its huge lens.

Despite having a 10x optical zoom lens, the Lumix still manages to occupy the niche of pocket camera ... just! The 9mp resolution, whilst arguably not as high as other cameras on the market at the moment, is on a fantastic CCD sensor, nd hence gives great pictures, unless taken at high ISO ratings, where there is a small amount of noise.

The option of HD videoing is a nice addition, but with a limited time span, and no option of zooming, it should not be seen as a major selling factor of the camera.

The lens itself has been fantastic, with the Leica branding being what made my favour it over the olympus mju1010.

I was able to pick it up at Jessops for a competitive £176, though I believe that a newer model will be released in the not so distant future - I would also highly advise that one invests in a high speed class6 + SDHC card to get the full value out of the camera, as well as a spare set of batteries - one of my few qualms with the camera would arguably be its relatively short battery life.

Overall a simply fantastic camera, which one should really consider when buying a compact digital.

Summary: Simply fantastic camera - ought to be considered by anyone.
