Good all round camera but just dont expect to take those once in a lifetime photos too often.

I purchased this camera over two years ago, after having a superb little casio exilm camera. Having read many many reviews I purchased it at the price of £240 which at the time the rrp was 299. Over the years, I have become more and more frustrated at the fact that the camera is so incredidly slow at retaking shots. After taking a shot you may need to wait for possibly up to 10-12 seconds before allowing you to retake another shot. In this day and age i believe that is much much too long, especially as the exilm could take a shot every second. I understand the larger megapixel on the camera means it takes longer to process but how long it takes is just crazy. This is my main bug bearer about this camera and the one reason i will be chaning it very soon. Dont get me wrong its a very good camera, but with having a baby i want to be able to take loads of shots in a small amount of time and the burst feature is just not up to the job in regards to quality and focus. If you need a good camera for taking the occasional photo this is the one, but if you are looking to take all those magical moments time after time i would definitely look elsewhere.

Overall, really good camera for its price

This is an absolutely brilliant camera for a compact! I've had mine for over a year now and its been really useful. The shutter speed is really good, provided there is enough lighting. The wide angle is pretty much more than enough. More often than not, I've had to rely on the zoom to make the subject bigger or at least fill enough of the screen! The buttons are all very conveniently placed and its such a light camera. With the colour modes, I suggest using the 'vivid' option, since the 'normal' option tends to look a bit muted. You can use memory cards up to 32GB, not that you'll need it, but it might be handy if you're on a very long holiday with no access to storage. Battery life is extremely good too, and the quality of the photos are absolutely brilliant. Be careful of red-eyes, however, when taking portraits with the flash. The 'red-eye reduction' function doesn't actually do much reducing. The flash is also very bright, so it might come out slightly harsh. Personally, I wouldn't suggest using flash unless absolutely necessary. The non-flash pictures come out brilliantly already.

        Great Value!

I had this Camera bought for me as a birthday present at the end of last year and at the time believe it cost about £100, which is not bad what it is. The best main features of it are the design, its small enough to carry around places and quite light and the zoom is also a really good, no blur. I took a photo of a sunset far away with the landscape setting and it looked amazing with the full Zoom on.
I also really like the soft skin setting it has for taking portrait photos, gives a nice glow to faces.
It didn't come with a protector case, but i soon found a cheap one from asda that was the right size for only £5
I cant really think of any disadvantages of the camera so far after having it for a few months i having nothing bad to say for the price it was i think it definitely worth the money.
Comes with everything you'd normally expect, charger, usb cable ect, although i haven't used the usb cable yet as you can just take the memory card out and put it in to a laptop or computer, which i love because it saves having to carry a usb cable when travelling or just searching for it, if your like me and stuff it in an overcrowded draw somewhere. So overall a great camera and i dont think ill be purchasing a new one any time soon :)

        Quality camera and photos

For the size of this camera the results are similar to SLR cameras, but with a more practical size. The camera is easily portable, I have had it since Christmas, have used it at least every few days and there has been no visible wear and tear yet, despite the large screen (liable to scratches, but none have occurred yet).

The screen has a high resolution and a clear picture to display photos immediately. The battery has a long life, needing recharging rarely, and quick to recharge too. The quality of printed photos and photos on screen is high.

The zoom is also very useful, the anti-shake function means that even when taking highly zoomed in photos on moving vehicles the images come out clear and concise (I did try out the function when actively shaking it and the results were just as good).

The different functions on the camera can be quickly found and effective on the easy to use menus. The camera is easy to use for novices and professionals and gives high quality results.

A rewarding and forgiving camera that has many useful features

We used this camera intensively during two weeks in the US and were very pleased with it. With 14 megapixels and a 16x zoom that remains at good definition at extreme ranges there are a few more options that improved our opinion of the camera.

Different shooting modes are accessed using the dial at the top. As I'm no expert photographer I relied on the 'SCN' setting which allows you to choose various different presets such as 'candlelight' 'moving target', 'landscape' and 'portrait'. This automatically alters the shutter speed, exposure and flash to suit to the conditions of the description of the setting. Using the 'moving target' setting allowed me to take some great pictures even when we were going at 65mph.

All of the other photography settings seem to be there such as white balance, video capture, macro vision and playback. Apart from playback I fiddled around with these options but didn't take any good pics, but that's probably my own skills rather than the camera.

We took over 500 photos over two weeks and the camera required charging about once every two days on average, but it did see very heavy use. The shutter button and zoom are located at the top of the camera, and was very user friendly. Indeed, we had people from all over the world offer to take photographs for us and they all seemed to intuitively know how to operate it.

There is no view finder so you're always relying on the display for composition, you can add a target or a grid to assist with composition. Autofocus works well, and the camera appeared to locate and 'track' peoples faces and other targets, keeping them in focus as a priority. I am told this is a new feature with modern cameras, being an evolution of the auto-focus.

Transferring your photos is done via USB to your PC and I there's no dedicated software included to do so, which I found rather refreshing.

The only drawback is that the buttons and controls are very small, so if you have big hairy frying pan hands like me you may have trouble twisting the little dials around without accidentally pressing another button.

In summary, I am not very good at taking photographs, but was able to take lots of acceptable photographs using the TZ-18.
