Samsung PL120 Purple
Advantages: Great as a point-and-shoot camera, looks great, small and light, great quality photos
Disadvantages: Can't figure out how to program settings
I'd been wanting a new camera for ages when I saw this lovely purple one on sale on the Very website. I'll be honest, the main reason I wanted it was the colour! BUT when I actually looked into it it seemed like a very good camera for the price I paid which was £79.99.
When the camera first arrived I was surprised by just how small and compact it is, it's a great size for carrying around with you as it can easily fit into a pocket, it's smaller than a lot of mobile phones! It also looks great with it's metallic purple finish and the design is simple but stylish.
It's a 14.2 megapixel camera and so it gives fantastic quality clear photos. It has a 2.7 inch LCD screen which takes up most of the back of the camera, as well as a hidden 1.5 inch screen on the front. The main screen is a great size for viewing your photos and you can get a very clear idea of how the photos will come out as the screen is very high quality, unlike others I've had in the past where the screen is not the best quality and so doesn't give a true picture of how the photo will come out.
The screen on the front is invisible until you want to use it then it appears as if by magic next to the camera lens. This screen can be used to take self-portraits so you can see exactly what picture you're taking instead of just having to hope for the best, and it can also be used to play little distracting images for children to make them look at the camera.
The camera has loads of different settings which can be used to get the perfect picture in all kinds of different situations, and it's very easy to find and choose these in the menu. As a point-and-shoot camera it really is fantastic and very easy to use, BUT there is also the option to program your own settings and I have not been able to figure out how to do this at all, once I'm in the program screen it doesn't seem to matter what I do nothing seems to change so I'm not really sure how this works. I'm not exactly a technical wizard but I've never not been able to figure out all of the settings and uses for a camera before! So that's perhaps something to consider if you're not very technically minded and would want to use more than just the easy automatic settings.
On the whole though the camera is easy to use and you can just turn it on and point and shoot without having to mess around with the settings, as the automatic setting is very good at choosing the best options for the conditions that you're shooting in. It also has 5x optical zoom so you're able to get a better and clearer picture without losing any picture quality, then there's also an additional digital zoom for if you don't mind losing a bit of picture quality.
It has all the usual 'fix' settings that the majority of decent cameras have these days, such as 'beauty shot' where it smooths out imperfections, face recognition, blink detection, red-eye reduction etc. so you can get the nest possible photos very easily and it negates the need to photoshop them afterwards. I've never had any photos come out badly when using this camera, it gives great results every time.
The battery lasts really well and it can be charged straight from the USB port of your computer which means that every time you connect it to transfer your photos it's getting charged up. The only problem I've had is that sometimes my laptop can't seem to connect to it, but I'm not sure whether that's the camera, the USB cable or the USB port of my laptop, so I can't say it's a downside of the camera.
All in all a great high quality camera and very good value for money at this price.
