Love my Samsung ST550, its easy to use and looks really smart. I've always been a fan of taking photo's of me and a friend or me and my boyfriend at arms length, seeming to always get an unsightly arm in the picture or chop off someones head! With this camera you can see on the front of the screen how it looks and it takes automatically after a delay. This stops you shaking it around while trying to find the button and hold on to the camera in one hand, so the picture comes out great. The picture quality is ace and has really sparked my enthusiasm for photography. I think for a non professional camera you can get some amazing results. The zoom and focus and great and the functions allow you to use it in many different lights and scenarios to its full potential.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Despite battery life, still one of my most used and best purchases.

This really is a really good camera. It takes really good high quality photos and the hd video recording is amazing! The most useful feature is definitely the front lcd screen. It gets used on every night out as me and my friends like to take a lot of photos when we go out. It's definitely the perfect camera for those in their early twenties like myself. But I wouldn't limit it to that as I have a lot of small children in my family, so they really get amazed by the front lcd screen too and it helps capture the perfect photo in a much quicker time than other cameras as children tend to actually look at the camera rather than be distracted by other things. I've owned a few cameras, and this one is definitely the best! The camera also has a lot of extra (usually unnecessary) features, but is still good to have and play around with every now and again. It's definitely a camera that when brought out, everyone loves and wants! There is however a downside to all these amazing qualities.....the battery life! On a night out it's fine, will use about half the battery. But when on holiday, the battery won't last a full day, so I've bought another battery to carry around with me just in-case. For the normal user 1 battery will probably be fine, however I do like to take A LOT of photos while looking back at them straight away, so for me, 1 battery doesn't always last a whole day. I've owned this for over a year now and still not bored.....and I tend to get bored of gadgets easily and always usually need an update every year!

Good looking, snazzy camera with cool features

I love my Samsung ST550! Ihad been weighing up my options and sifting through the millions of camera reviews for ages, but from the start I think I knew this was the one for me! I hold my hands up and admit that my vanity got the better of me and I was swayed by the front screen and beauty fshoot function, but I am glad with my choice. A definite party pleaser and hours of fun are to be had.

The camera is small and compact and fits in your pocket or in your handbad, although I have been wise and brought a case for mine. My last camera, on one evening out, survived a drenching from a whole glass of rose, but departed this world after I dropped it onto the pavement :( This time its different, I am taking care of my ST550 as I have become very attached.

I have recently been up in the mountains and I have taken some absolutely stunning shots. To be honest I havent watched the CD with all the instructions and guides blah blah blah, but this camera is easy to navigate and easy to use. I do keep finding new things so I think I should set aside a little time to watch the instructions...

So the deal grabber on this has to be the front screen. You can actually see yourself when you take the photo! In this culture driven by social networking and uploading your photos, this is perfect. The front screen is actually a great idea as it counts down to the shot and also diplays a picture of a clown to keep young kids/babies entertained!

This camera has a cool touch screen and features such as beauty shot, night mode, macro, sunset and fireworks, image stabalisation, face recognition, picture editing. The lens is a Schneider- Kreuznach 4.6x which is great, but ideally I would've preferred something with a bit more zoom, but I sacrificed this for that front screen! The only down point is that the picture review became a little slow when the memory was quite full :(

It makes a great talking point, making it an excuse to take pictures.

A great camera at parties and get togethers, but doesnt deliver picture quality at its price tag, the back 3.5" touchscreen is as vibrant and touch sensitive as expected, the front screen is a great feature for those taking self portraits, it even plays an animation to attract young childrens attention so as to get a perfect picture. The downfall is the poor performance in low light, the grainy pictures and the lack of vibrations reduction when taking a picture using the zoom function. Its great in megapixels, even slight above average in optical zoom, but it seems you pay more for the dual screens than you do for good pictures. You also pay in usage time, the battery drains itself before an evening is over. Samsung have also decided to limit the camera with its intake of only Micro SD cards, instead of the standardised SD Cards, which most other manufacturers comply with. If you have the money its an impressive accessory and a decent camera.

Great Value for money and quality

The Most intellegant camera I have come across to date. 12.2 Mega Pixles gives every picture a great quality and perfect detail. Can give you stunning pictures from quite a distance. Actually has a touch screen on the frond of the camera next to the lens so you can take a great picture of yourself with out having to hand it over to strangers to take one for you. The Camera itself is very simple to use. You actually practically know what everything does after a mater of minutes. The price for this product is brilliant as the camera is reliable and great fun to take pictures with friends.

You can find this camera in practically every electrical goods stores such as Comet, Curry's Digital, Argos etc and are priced around the same price.
This item is also found on electrical goods Websites.

The only disadvantage i would give this item it could do with a few more features.

Overall this item is great for value and shouldnt be missed.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A smart little camera aimed at the younger generation

The Samsung ST550 is the first compacy digital camera of its kind. Featuring two LCD screens, it makes taking pictures even easier. The Samsung ST550 features a 12.2 mega pixel sensor and 4.6x zoom lens.
This camera seems to be aimed at the younger MySpace/Facebook crowd, interested in taking pictures of themselves for their profile, and the picture quality is excellent enough to put on these sites - as you would expect from Samsung.
The main purpose for the second postage stamp sized LCD screen seems to be aimed at lone travellers - making it easier to take self potraits. The screen also has a children's mode and displays an image of a clown to capture a babies attention when taking a picture.
The camera also has a "smile feature". When enabled, it will automatically dectect faces and when it recognises a smile, will take a picture.
The downfall with this camera is the battery life. The Samsung ST550 seems to be thirsty and it's advised you carry a spare battery.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Only worth its money if you must have the front screen.

As I am sure most of the Dooyoo members will now know, I am a professional photographer but as well as taking pictures I also hold photography seminars at my local camera club and over the last few years I have become somewhat of a target for sales persons asking me to try out their latest digital cameras and give talks and written reviews on them.

I figured a couple of years back if I was going to be testing out all these cameras and doing reviews anyway then I may as well be posting them on Ciao and Dooyoo and making some money for charity which as a lot of you will know is what I do now.

I have not written a review for some time but I have still been testing cameras for my camera club and have plenty to tell you all about, some good, some not so. I have just about found the time to write a review on the Samsung ST550 a camera which was announced back in August and yet again Samsung were giving us a worlds first, a compact camera with front and back LCD technology.

Too often however, when a company have a big new gimmick on their camera they forget to make sure that all the expected things within the camera are up to scratch but thankfully with this one that is not the case and Samsung really have produced a good compact camera that does have something different from the rest (for now anyway)!

As anyone who has been a regular user of compact cameras over the years will know, the use of digital imaging technologies has evolved greatly and there are things now in digital compact cameras that a few years ago we had not heard of but we now expect as standard and Samsung do not let us down with this.

The Samsung St550 has a one touch shooting and auto function which allows you to change the focal point of the autofocus from the centre of the image to other areas, it also features a smart auto or scene recognition function which allows you to focus on the basic composition of your shot whilst the camera takes care of the aperture and shutter speed for you to get the best possible shot from the conditions you are shooting in.

You then get the more gimmicky settings such as smart face recognition which automatically recognises up to 20 faces in one shot and sets about making sure that the faces are clear and in focus but Samsung have taken this one step further and this camera actually remembers faces that it sees regularly and prioritises them when focusing a shot, I call this a gimmick because I personally feel it is the duty of the photographer to catch a great photo and no camera can ever do the work of a good photographer, that and also that this function for me does not actually work too well.

The other annoying claim that this camera makes is that it can shoot HD movie recording, when will still cameras stop trying to be video cameras? A camera of this quality can shoot very decent still images and in the very best lighting conditions can indeed capture HD movie footage but as soon as the light is anything less than perfect then the video footage is poor quality and in my opinion pointless.

Back to what is good about the camera and we have a very useful Dual image stabilisation system within this camera that offers both digital and optical image stabilisation that ensure that even when zooming in you get blur free images almost every time even in low light situations.

The Samsung ST550 has a 12.2 megapixel sensor and unlike many of the compact cameras it has a lens which will allow you to get the benefit of what the sensor can produce, the images I took on the first day of using this camera were all taken outdoors under grey cloud and they were all very good clear and colour rich images and the white balance settings within this unit worked very well as standard and along with the fact that the ISO can be set manually and offers a good range with up to 800 ISO shooting virtually noise free it meant that I could capture the colours in my images exactly as the naked eye saw them on the day.

Now came the cameras next test which was indoor use with its own flash for lighting and like many compacts it failed spectacularly here, with the images having really bad hot spots and every person photographed having horrendous red eye even with the red eye reduction activated, now I cannot be too harsh on the camera for this because almost every compact will produce this result and the one thing this camera had in its favour was that it could cope well with focusing in poor light and apart from the annoying hot spots the rest of the image had excellent colour reproduction and perhaps with a bit of time in Photoshop these images could be greatly improved.

The next test I gave this little unit was to use it in conjunction with some studio lighting and it worked very well, producing very good images that could actually compare with some low end DSLR`s, this might be a bit of a pointless exercise because I doubt anyone buying this would use it with studio lights but I thought I would mention it anyway.

Ok now let's move on to what is the cameras main selling point, its dual LCD screens. The one on the rear is the world's highest resolution LCD screen to date and measures a massive 3 and a half inches and also has touch screen features whilst the small one on the front to allow you to compose photos of yourself is a one and a half inch offering with much less clarity but still useful should you want to take pictures of yourself for whatever reason.

So here we have a camera that offers everything you would expect along with a few things you might not and it takes very good photos too so is it then the best compact around? Well no it is not and it is much more expensive than many other compacts that can compete with it admirably and a few that can beat it for overall picture quality, I personally feel that the Sony Cybershot DSC-W180 produces better final images under all circumstances than this camera and costs around £100 less so unless you really must have the front screen then perhaps you should think carefully about spending £220 on this camera.

If you have £220 to spend and you really want the latest technology then fine go ahead and purchase this safe in the knowledge that what you will be buying is a very good compact camera with the very latest state of the art technology but if all you want is a good compact that can produce good images and has the basic things that you expect these days then my advice to you would be to shop around and save your pennies, and if you want the best possible camera for your money and do not care if it is compact or otherwise then you could buy a superzoom camera for the price of this and a decent starter level DSLR for only around £50 more.

        TO SUM UP:

This camera has lots to offer but in my opinion is a little over priced for what it actually is, I guess the extra cost is due to the front screen which is certainly something I could live without, in fact I would go so far as to say that it is pointless technology in my honest opinion. I know there could come a time where you find yourself alone in a great place and want to capture the moment but is it really so hard to take a photo of yourself without a front screen?

Anyway to move on from that, you have a nice looking well built camera with the capability of capturing great photos, it has a rechargeable battery which for me is always the best way to go rather than having to replace AA`s every five minutes. The other good points of this camera far outweigh the bad but the price alone for me is a huge stumbling block, because in my opinion this camera is nowhere near £100 better than the other compacts on the market and as I have said there are actually much less expensive compacts that can outperform it so it really is all about whether or not you feel the need for a front LCD screen!
