Advantages: easy to use, well designed, compact

Disadvantages: variable results, poor pictures

I bought a Sony Cyber-shot when my previous, well loved camera, was dropped and sadly broke, so the Cyber-shot had a lot to live up to. In some areas, it succeeded. In others, it didn't.

The Cyber-shot is visually pleasing with a slick chrome finish and easy to use click wheel at the top of the camera to allow you to alternate between a variety of pre set photo settings such as 'twilight' and 'snow'. The preview screen on the back is a decent size for viewing the pictures you've taken, and the lens retracts into the body of the camera which prevents it being damaged, with an automatic lens cap that closes when the camera is switched off to prevent scratching.

Nevertheless, I've found with the Cyber-shot, that picture quality is often hit and miss. Sometimes, despite waiting a reasonable amount of time for the camera to focus, and using the correct light settings, the picture can appear excessively blurred, or will react to light in unexpected ways by bleaching the colour of the photograph. Sometimes the reaction time between pressing the button to take the picture, and the actual action of the camera is excessively long - too long than you would expect people to pose naturally, or to capture a candid moment.

This camera is good for general use, but don't expect miracles from it. The results can sometimes vary for no discernible reason.

Summary: A hit and miss camera that is mostly suitable for general, occasional use.
