Advantages: easy to use, Crisp, high quality images, Good optical zoom

Disadvantages: included memory stick is a bit small

The DSC-P50 is a 2MP (1600X1200) digital camera capaable of recording still images and video onto sony memory sticks.

STILL IMAGES:

These can be takes at 640X480, 1024X768, 1600X1200 using either TIFF or JPEG at two different quality settings. Pictures taken at 1600X1200 as a tiff will take up ~5MB and will give a beatiful A4 printout, 1600X1200 as a JPEG will use 700KB and will give a photographic quality A5 printout. Lower resolutions can be used if the images are for e-mail or webpages.

MOVING VIDEO:

The camera can capture video as an MPEG Movie at 320X240 or 160X112 or as an animated GIF at 160X112 or 80X56, Neither can record sound but the video outputed is perfectly watchable for cpaturing those special moments.

GENERAL CAMERA DETAIL:

The camera has a flash and red eye reduction, it autofocuses and is pretty much point and shoot however quite a number of settings can be changed such as sharpness, whiteness, iso number, etc. The shutter varies from 1/800s to 2s with a special mode for twilight or nightime photos which it does remarkebly well if it is placed on a steady surface. The camera also has a 3X optical (41-123mm) and a 2X digital zoom ontop of that. The camera has a very high quality 1.5" screen with 120K pixels (much more than many cameras) as well as the usual viewfinder.

CAPACITY:

The camera can run on 2AA bateries (60 mins) or a sony rechargable infolithium battery (120 mins) which gives remaining battery life in minutes on the screen. The camera comes with a pitiful 4MB of memoery but it is compatible with memory stick and magicgate. Using a 64MB sticj you can have 66 top quality JPEGs or just under 1000 lowest quality images or 40mins of low qualty MPEG video. The images and video are transfered via the supplied USB cable by the supplied USB cable which is very easy to set up.

WHAT COMES IN THE BOX:

In the box there is the camera, 2 AA bateries, a USB ca
ble, A cable so as you can display pics on your TV, a 4MB Memory stick and some software (USB drivers, phtotsuite and videowave). This is all you need to get started. As optional extras you can buy bigger memory sticks, a infolithium battery + charger and a carrying case.

OVERALL:

This is a very easy to use camera, perfect for the beginner or the more experienced photographer. It has a very high quality LCD screen and CCD. The included software is very good and worth using. The bundled accesories get you started imediatly but the 4MB memory stick is far to small. The camera gives the excedingly high image quality we have come to expect from sony and it is built to a very high standard.
