The Sony DSC-U10 produces 1.2-megapixel images. This cute camera records images at a resolution of 1,280x960 pixels or 640x480 pixels. At 640x480 you can also record a burst of five shots at half-second intervals. The movie mode records at 320x240 pixels without audio. You'll squeeze 23 images on to the supplied 8Mb card at highest resolution or 80 at the lower resolution.

Four navigation buttons access the controls and settings of the U10. The three flash modes include a red-eye reduction mode. Sony is trying to cut down on camera startup times and the U10 is ready more quickly than most once it is turned on. There is no optical or digital zoom, but it doesn't matter much as this is a fun snapshot camera that doesn't necessarily need them.

The 1" LCD screen is very kind to the battery and does not reduce its life significantly. The supplied NiMH AAA batteries are rechargeable via the supplied charger or via USB. The U10's white balance is not adjustable but it is fairly good anyhow. A 2-megapixel version that uses Memory Stick Duo, which is half the size of Memory Stick, will be available soon.

This is a lovely little camera that's as cheap as other manufacturers' half-brick-sized cameras yet offers the same picture resolution. Don't expect fantastic quality from the U10, but do expect to be surprised at how good the image quality is.
