Hmm i would say just write a list but that never seems to work as everyone realises they have left somethign important at home or forgotten to do something once its too late.
My list, in no particular order, is:

MONEY: very important as it is absolutely crucial and you cannot get anything without it. I always try to have some of the destination currency before hand too.

PASSPORTS/TICKETS: again you can see why they are important, so how come so many people forget theirs?

ELECTRICALS/ADAPTER: hair straighteners are a must. Also there is no point taking any unless you take an adapter.

CLOTHES: gorgeous clothes are essential especially on the beach.

SHOES: everyone needs multiple pairs of gorgeous shoes.

SUNSCREEN: you don't want to wreck your holiday by getting sunburn so sunscreen is a definite.

BOOKS/MAGAZINES: great to read just before you go to sleep or to relax on the beach with. Also, they make the plane journey a lot more bearable.

IPOD: again the plane journey will be made easier and great for passing time.

CAMERA: pictures are the best memoirs and help you to relive your great times again and again.

TOILETRIES: this includes shampoo, body wash, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shaving cream, facial masks and make up.

Summary: What i could'nt live without
