Advantages: Holiday is prettier
Disadvantages: People know what you live on
I travel considerably, both in britain and internationally. Experience makes me be able to pack my luggage in two hours before I set off to the airport. And this can be done withouth even ticking any list. Neverthelss, most of my travels are not holidays. I go to places for particular reasons - commitment, business etc. - and it usually limits what I have to take for the journey. Holiday is different, however. You bring things that are especially for holiday moment, whether it is for the comfort of the journey or to express individual style. When we are thinking what is the most important thing for our holiday, we begin to look into ourselves. If when you arrive your holiday destination, feeling confident and assuring with what is with you, well done, it means that you understand yourself very well. So when I see this topic, I begin to think: what will I really have in my luggage if it is a 'holiday'?
The most straightforward answer could be: passport, credit cards, flight tickets, then the choice may come to toiletry, swimsuit, CDs, books and glasses. Of course, if your luggage is not over the weight limit, take as much as you want. 'Ten indispensible things' can conveniently become 'ten most favourable'. They may show individual style, but are they really something someone cannot live without during holiday?
In this way, I made a slight alteration to the question: what if you are ONLY allowed with ten items on the journey? It is not about ten different catagories which may contain variable sub-items, it is about bringing only ten individual accessories with you. The answer will definitely make the feeling 'indispensible' stand out. It is like a reality TV show in which participants can carry no more than ten items when going on holiday. But is it still a holiday? Or it became a journey of challenge?
This is my list of ten items:
1. Passport. Unfortunately, before technology advances to the stage when bio ID free everyone from papers, I have to stick to my passport. It may get lost, be stolen, be damaged. No pressure, but I have to keep it in mind.
2. Plastic card. Money is everything. I can pay with my card if a shop has a machine installed. Or I can withdraw money from most ATMs.
3. My glasses. I cannot see a thing without them.
4. Ear plugs. You never know if some wankers are having holiday in the same hotel with you, or loud snore may come from next room. Quiet nights of sleep is essential to refresh yourself after a full day's walking.
5. A piece of blackout cloth. My personal need. 95% of hotels only have very thin curtains for guests. Early sunlight is very disturbing especially when it happens at 3 or 4 in some places. I used to search towels, blankets, extra bed sheets in my room to put them over windows.
6. Water filter jar. Again, personal preference. It saves precious holiday time from looking for shops to buy clean water.
7. Mobile phone. Normally no one calls me and I do not phone anyone during holidays. But it is always safe to have it by side. Besides, my phone can be camera, film recorder, music player, watch, memo pad as well as alarm clock. I can also check emails and browse Internet on it, though keeping in touch is the last thing I want to do on holiday.
8. Knee supports. It is complicated but my knees sometimes get 'stuck' and I am used to having supports in my bag wherever I go just in case.
9. My sleeping pajama.
10. My pillow. It is actually optional, depending on the rate of the hotel on holiday. Some basic hotels provide terrible pillows which keep you awake and give headache all night.
If money is not issue, I would rather take as less things as possible when on holiday. A friend of mine admitted that she would rather just take her passport, credit card and contact lenses for travel, instead of dragging a heavy, bulky suitcase in and out or up and down. Holiday is about having fun and enjoyable time, being free from daily hussles and nuiance. But it seems we can never free ourselves from certain things.
Summary: Thanks God air companies do not limit our luggage with ten things.
