Advantages: Odd, strange, bizarre, unusual, freaky
Disadvantages: Odd, strange, bizarre, unusual, freaky
I've had a good old read of these reviews about how strange we all think we are and since I know I'm far odder than most of you, I'd have a go. I'm not going to tell you my deepest darkest secrets, just a few things that will make you think "Phew, at least I'm not as odd as that beckyX, what an eccentric person she is!"
=== 1 - I do crazy sports ===
I thought I'd start with the thing that has the most people saying how mad I am. I do crazy sports. Now crazy sports means different things to different people, but I figure it probably counts if I've broken a bone or if more than three or four people go "What?! Are you completely MAD?!". I confess that I do buy the videos of me doing these sports just to get a reaction from people.
So, as a for instance, a week ago, I jumped off a 70 foot high tower and relied on the wire attached to my back to brake my fall before I broke myself all over the floor. Loads of fun, perfectly safe, so why would so few of my friends take part?!
I love the fastest highest rides at theme parks and fairs. The scarier the better as far as I'm concerned - and since I'm scared of heights, yes, I do still find them all very scary! That's the point of them! I've been bungee jumping, canyon swinging, paragliding, parascending, jet boating, abseiling, climbing, zorbing, sandboarding, canoeing, mountain biking, trekking, rafting, caving, and I've even played croquet. No, I know that last one isn't usually considered an adventure sport, I'm just really clumsy and hit myself over the head with the mallet. Fortunately, everyone at work assumed my black eye was from karate.
I also commute 4 miles per day by bike. Radical or what? Well, I've actually notched up more broken bones cycling on-road in cities than I have in karate plus all the other sports combined, so I thought I should include that as being a really hardcore sport. To be completely fair on cycling as a sport, I should point out that it is *rapidly involuntarily dismounting* from a bike that seems to be the dangerous part, not the cycling. I can disrecommend the following methods of dismount: a)over the handlebars, b)On the bonnet of a car, c)via the assistance of an additional bicycle coming out from a side road and d)under the wheels of any other kind of vehicle at all (even a bike) and e)any other method that involves going from 20mph to zero in a short space of time that leaves you not in cycling position.
=== 2 - Unusual career choice===
I'm a computer programmer. That's my day job. And *gasp* wait for it, I'm FEMALE too. Wow, the things they let women do nowadays eh? (Hint, just don't expect me to cook - I set fire to the dinner at the weekend).
Fortunately, I live in a town which has a huge proportion of technical companies, so it isn't generally considered exciting enough to comment upon these days. But when I was at university, people at parties would find someone else to talk to once they found out what I was studying.
=== 3 - I'm a bit of a tomboy ===
I was always a little bit of a tomboy when I was a child, even though I had asthma and absolutely no co-ordination, which meant that I was terrible at sports. And somehow I never quite grew out of that sort of thing, both the tomboyishness and the clumsiness.
One of my acquaintances remarked recently that that was the first time in over five years of knowing me they'd ever seen me in a dress - well, it was very hot after all and the dress was far more comfortable in the heat. Most of the rest made jokes along the lines that I was in drag because I was wearing girl clothes and I never wear girl clothes.
=== 4 - The trouble with school is... ===
My claim to fame at school was that I got expelled from my school's Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
I hasten to add that I hadn't actually done anything that I should have been punished for (well, not that they knew about anyway ;-)), they just thought that, because of having a disability, I was too big a liability to do the hiking. Yeah, really nice and inclusive of them, I know.
However, this has a happy ending: When I grew up, I went and hiked the Inca Trail and proved them all wrong. Take that, Mean Old School!
=== 5 - My choice of movies ===
My guilty secret is that I do secretly watch quite a few chick flicks and may even go to see the new Twilight film (don't tell anyone!). I am, however, absurdly macho and would die of shame if I were ever caught at the cinema watching any of those. That's a sunglasses and wig job if ever there was one.
But my true love film-wise is horror, action and video nasties. Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are my favourite directors. Of course, in real life, I am a pacifist and nonviolent, but when you go to the cinema, there's nothing like a good old Zombie Apocalypse or shoot-em-up.
So, there you go. Now you know five reasons to stay away from that beckyX. What an oddball eh?
Summary: Apparently I'm a bit odd
