Advantages: Can be helpful for some
Disadvantages: loss of a foetus
I have read a few reviews on this matter and have been moved by some of them so I decided to write my own personal opinion on the matter. Being a male, I luckily will never have to endure such an operation.
So what is an abortion? It is the termination of a foetus between 0-24 weeks after conception. This is an operation which entails the removal of the foetus from the womb. One can also abort a child by taking an abortion pill. This in effect means the embryo does not attach itself to the womb, thus preventing pregnancy. There are known side effects to this pill and care should be taken when consuming these.
Now my opinion on the matter.
I feel that a woman has the option to have an abortion if she so wishes. I believe accidents happen during intercourse and these may not be found out until a few weeks after. Also one could think that they are ready for a child and then realise that they would not be able to handle such a responsibility. Considering the state of the youth of today, perhaps it would have been better for their parents to have had an abortion, seeing how these parents have clearly not done a good job in raising these kids.
Those that are anti-abortion should consider unwanted pregnancies, pregnancies as a result of rape and pregnancies for those that would not be able to handle children - surely a termination is allowable in these circumstances?
I agree that a lot of teens seem to use abortion as a contraceptive - I personally think that it is their choice. If they want to have an abortion - let them. If they feel that they can handle the consequences - let them. Since we live in a liberal, democratic society, I feel that abortion is an option for those who wish to use it and it should be considered.
Having bashed the youth (I am 23 so it wasn't long ago since I was that age!) I digress. Those women who are more settled and are married - you too should beware of pregnancies. If you are happy and your husband is happy and then you fall pregnant, both parties could react differently. The woman, if she changes her mind on the issue, always has the option of having an abortion (I know it is a serious operation, but people can use it as a method of birth control). If the male changes his mind, then I'm sorry, but he too should have the option of having nothing to do with the child when it arrives. The scenario is weighted in favour of the female (obviously), but I do feel that men should have some sort of way of getting out of the situation.
Women who allow themselves to get stuck in a relationship where they are being "controlled" by men should take some responsibility for their own lives. At the end of the day, people treat you how you let them treat you. If they don't treat you well - then get out of the situation as soon as you can. I do stress that I personally feel that someone should not allow it to get to that point - if they treat you like dirt then get rid!
Some abortions are necessary (when the foetus/mother are at risk). This is a no-brainer for me. Do what is best for you. If the woman thinks that her health is in danger then she should seriously consider an abortion. Also, foetus' that will develop into a severely handicapped child - the mother to be should think "can I handle this situation on my own"?
To summarise - I am pro-choice and it is a decision that should be made after a lot of deliberation.
Summary: Up to you

- 27/02/09 I agree - how can a person say that ALL women should do this, or ALL women should do that - it's down a woman's own choice and circumstances. Good review. |
