Advantages: He is going to be missed
Disadvantages: new talent can prove themselves
Following the past week of thought Tony Adams has decided to retire from international football to concentrate on his club Arsenal. Tony realised he had one thought in mind, and that was his body. Something had to give, so it was the England team. My personal view is that the appointment of the new England boss Sven Goran Eriksson effected Tony's decision. He knew Sven would be looking for new young talent even though he was quoted as saying ' I will not over look the over thirties and we need the experience. From watching the England teams most recent qualifying games against Germany and Finland, I felt we were in need of a desperate change. Against Italy with new stand-in boss Peter Taylor there was a better look of young, fresh talent. It was a positive outcome even though Italy came away with the win. Following Tony Adams' retirement I think it can only be positive for the England team as new talent will come in. Even though I feel Tony's retirement is a positive move for the England team, he will be sadly missed. Inspirational, brave and courageous are all words to describe Tony's performances for England. He was proud to where the three lions on his shirt. If we had a team of Tony's it could only be a good thing, maybe for the exception of goal scoring.

- 01/02/01 I think you hit the nail right on the head, relating his decision, and ADamancy, to retire with the appointment of Svenners! (you can see I've quite taken to him :) )
Do yoo remember his initial thoughts on the appointment of Wenger to Arsenal?
Sadly, despite the flourishing youth culture in terms of up and coming talent, you don't see a natural (and bellowing) captain of the Adams, Ince or Robson ilk. Some might argue a case for Bowyer or Lampard that have both captained successful u-21 sides. But neither are in the same sort of class as Adams.
He'll be missed. |
