Position: Defender Born: Romford, October 10, 1966 Height: 6ft 3ins Weight: 13st 11lbs Previous Clubs: Signed from trainee The Arsenal and now ex-England captain and inspiration, Adams has been described as "the rock on which the modern Arsenal side is founded". A hugely imposing physical presence, allied to an intelligent reading of the game, has seen him recognised as one of the outstanding defenders of his generation and led to a trophy-laden career. His daunting power in the air also makes him a highly effective attacking option from set pieces. Adams has been an inspirational and influential figure, having captained his country through the Euro '96 campaign and making light of his off-the-field problems with alcohol addiction. The 97-98 season was another successful one for Adams who was named in the PFA Premiership Team of the Year, after leading Arsenal to the Premiership and FA Cup double. His 98-99 season was disrupted by injury but he netted twice in three games in September, to register crucial victories against Manchester United and Panathinaikos. He was hampered by ankle and back problems during the 1999-2000 but still played well over 30 games, including the disappointing UEFA Cup Final defeat to Galatasaray. Adams was appointed England captain in September 2000 to replace the retired Alan Shearer, but decided in January 2001 that he would quite the international scene to maintain his best fitness for Arsenal.
