Advantages: Better homes, better for the kids

Disadvantages: Worries over children in eternal care

Adoption is a VITAL service in society today. Women, sometimes couples, have their children adopted for a plethora of reasons, but the essential fact is they do so for what usually are the best reasons.

The real problem is about children being adopted.

Many criticise the adoption services for being too constrained, but the fact is that they have to have such set criteria for the system to be acceptable. At the moment we have the case of the baby twins who have supposedly been 'bought' by the couple who brought them over from the States. This is not acceptable. They were rejected by the Adoption service because of their age.

Oh how unfair.

Think about the child. They are adopted and loved by a couple who are 50, by the time he is twenty, they are seventy, and likely dead. If a younger couple can be found for that child, then they should be, because on the balance of objective criteria, it's better.

Imagine the furore if a child was placed in the home of a paedophile or violent parent due to an easing over restrictions on adoption.

What is needed is a balancing line. There are too many children in foster, temporary homes. These children need to be shipped out to families that want children and are eligible. There should be ACTIVE recruitment of parents willing to take on these kids. How many people out there have never really considered it before, but would really, after some thought and introduction to the idea, decide that they would really like it? Probably more than a few.

Now the second issue is why people don't adopt more often. Well... as for wanting to only have biological children of their own, it's a little out there for me personally. A child is a child, and the genes it gets aren't going to necessarily make it any more likeable. In the case of fathers they often rear children without realising that they aren't theirs.

What IS a legitimate worry however is what about the biological par
ents? I can understand the worry that adopting parents have is that the child will prefer it's 'natural' parents. This could well happen; but isn't it far more likely that the child would find another party to attach itself to anyway? And even if it does, is it not likely to be a temporary affair during the child's rebel years?

So all in all - GO ADOPTION! Adopt those CHILDREN. Babies are easy to adopt out - children are harder.
