My local team is AFC Bournemouth otherwise known as the Cherries. They have been in Division 2 for the last year. The year before that we were in Division 3 but won the playoff final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff 5-2 against Lincoln City, YESSSSSSSSS!!!

History - Bournemouth began life as Boscombe St. John's Institute FC in 1890 but dispended in 1899 and reformed as Boscombe FC. The club played in the Bournemouth District Junior League at Castlemaine Avenue in Pokesdown. They moved to the current site in Kings Park in 1902.

In 1910, Mr J.E. Cooper-Dean granted the team on a long lease some wasteland in Kings Park. The club thrived and name their ground after the benefactor Dean Court. This is when Bournemouth got the nickname the Cherries. This was because the ground was near an estate with many cherry orchards and they wore a cherry red striped shit when playing.

The club signed their first professional player (B. Penton) from Southampton in 1910 for the sum of £10.

In 1922, the club applied to play in the Football League. Their application was accepted and in 1923 they were playing in the FA Third Division South. The club was now known as Bournemouth and Boscombe FC. In their first game in Division 3, they lost 3-1 away to Swindon.

Bournemouth had to wait until after the War to win their first league trophy. The win came against Warsaw in the third Division South cup played at Stamford Bridge.

In 1956 Bournemouth went on an amazing cup run. The beat Burton Albion, Swindon, Accrington Stanley, Wolves and Tottenham Hotspurs and then faced Manchester United at home. They lost 2-1 to a questionable penalty and an offside goal. The attendance was a record 28799! For this run Bournemouth were awarded the Giant Killers Cup.

Ted MacDougal is the player with the most goals in a season at Bournemouth with 49 in the 70-71 season.

In 1972 Bournemouth and Boscombe changed their name to AFC Bourne
mouth.

On the 7th Jan 1984 under the management of Harry Redknapp, Bournemouth beat Manchester United 2-0 in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, the biggest giant killing in their history.

Since then Bournemouth had stayed in division two until 2002 when they were relegated to division three. In 2003 they won in the playoff final against Lincoln City 5-2.

This season they finished 9th in Division 2 with 66 points. Next season, they will be aiming for promotion.
