I dont know why there was such a power inbalance in the NFL between the 2 conferences for such a long time, but there was. The AFC was so much weaker than the NFC duringt he 80's and 90's until Denver was able to break the curse in 1997 and 1998. Still, today sees a much better balanced league with some excellent teams coming out of the AFC. It all began in 1960 for the AFC or, the AFL as it was then. 8 teams created a rival professional football league to the NFL which had been in existence for nearly 40 years.
