Advantages: Its the lesser of all ism evils
Disadvantages: Its rampant
Classism, ageism, sexism, racism, you name it, employers will do what ever they can to hire the right person for the job. The classic way of evading ethnic minorities is the so-called race relation’s survey where you have to tick your ethnicity box. Think about it, if that was there fore fairplay in employing ethnic minorities then what better reason for democracy of selection that not having it there at all. This is one of many ways employers are legally allowed to discriminate. The county and borough council are perhaps the only employers on this planet that use that for positive reasons to help other races get jobs for bias employers. The other fav ways of avoiding people not suited, especially in sexism to get women employers would be nimble fingered pickers and maternity cover. If a guy sees that he’s supposed to get the sub conscious message that its a no no matey. Theres notorious department store in London that will only employ women when ever it gets the chance. An advert on the window read”meanswear assistant required to cover" (maternity leave), If the guys cant measure up there than what chance of a job in the stockroom or back door area. Ageism is of course the most unrealistic of all prejudice apart from race ,as old is nearly always better at the job. More experience, better time keeping and less lip. But the bosses have to pay them good money so why not take a bit of stick from a cocky seventeen year old on half the money. I recall the supermarkets having a drive on older employees along with B&Q who liked the idea of their staff looking avuncular and handyman/womanish. To be honest checkouts have traditionally been there for women of any age at anytime, as it’s their natural habitat to yap all day. Ageism really bites when you are over looked in more skilled jobs for younger girls and guys you once were. In the police force most coppers want to get out and ageism
isn’t really an issue when pension time comes around at 50. But in most other careers theres an alarming amount of busy offices full of under thirties buzzing around keyboards and older wiser bosses. It’s those older ones that should no better who are employing the younger ones. The only reason I can see for that is energy and go getting levels are high where as the more senior staff are not so reckless which could be negative for the company in the long run somehow. Ageism is rampant in males over forty with nearly one third retiring early because of it or buried in the invalidity beneift. There believed to be over three million men on that particular benefit at anyone time.Just think how many that knocks of the dole figures. For a modern economy to work theres always going to ageism and just about everyone elseism. If the government allow those vulgar race relations forms then they will let the employer do as he pleases. Mrs Thatcher slaughtered the unions and Blair is just about to do the same with the trains. It’s a tough world out there and the older you get the harder it is.

- 23/01/02 It seems that as a workforce we are getting older as the sixties babyboomer are approaching their 40's, so maybe in the near future ageism will not be so common. |
