What do we blame it on? I mean ageism is one of many that get on my nerves especially as I find it so difficult to obtain a job myself. An employer should choose the best candidate for the situation regardless of age. Of course taking three steps back and two forward, if it is suitable as well. I am currently living down in Devon. As a student (after that word I will cower in the corner). I'm taking my degree and guess what I need money. Hey that’s new a student lacking in money. Mm wonder what they spent that on. I reply to the audience before I go on, rightly so! It's not all drinking games and late nights discussing the birds and the bees. We work hard to!

Employers have this bad habit of not liking that age group of about 18 to 21. It kind of represents to them late nights, or late arrivals at work. Another thing about Uni. students, they have brains, exceptions allowing of course. And in theory they're training to go for higher positions in the work place. Quick tongue's and are much more efficient then most other age ranges. As they are at that age where you are still quite resourceful when things go wrong. The ability to blame other colleagues without remorse for accidentally pushing the photocopier down the stairs. Conscience I believe develops with age, it’s a harsh world got to be strong.

On the less funnier side, we're seen as a threat. We do speak out when we find a problem and we're not for backing down in an argument. This is the less working, more pretentious side of students. Then you have the students that will work the arses of for money and they will abide by rules and regulations and bite their tongues. But because on that vital piece of paper it says, you are at the university of ? Then you are more likely to head immediately for the reject pile.

Also in my part of the world we have far more mature people working in the high street, I guess because of the lack of industry as you trav
el down towards Cornwall. We really can't compete even if we could do the job ten times better. We have study and they can work whatever the hours any day of the week. I could however miss lectures although this would be not to highly regarded by my loving father who is paying these silly tuition fees. (I say silly because without them there would be far more opportunity out there, for people that can't afford Uni.)

If you have the experience and the qualifications and the ability to communicate well with other workers, then we should be able to get at least an interview with the prospective employers. At the time sadly that’s not the case and out of 12 prospects, not even a reply or an interview which I find disheartening and rude on the employers part.

LOOKAROUNDCAFE I would love to rate many of yours petty and a waste of my time but, I don't have that resourse available to me. Yes we are an arrogant race and many expect things to be handed on a plate, but yet there are some (yes thats right, some!) that are stereotyped by students who abuse there jobs. Thats all I'm saying, attempting to add with in places. :)

I don`t want to comment too much as I would like to write an opinion on this one. However, when employing someone under 21, I would prefer that he/she were a student. I cannot speak for the experience of others, but I have found students have always been missed when they return to uni.Whereas the non-students' resignation has been greeted with a sigh of relief. Forgive me for a sweeping statement. I know there must be many exceptions. I just haven`t met them yet.
