Ageist is primarily a british problem. I have travelled a lot in Europe and find that most Europeans (outside England) regard age as just a number, Britains as a whole are medieval in a lot of their thoughts. I say if a person as the right qualifications for the job, and the experience then, he is the man for the job as in my mind experience is of far greater value than youth, and don't forget with age comes wisdom! so lets just say we get wiser not older! Bit phobias don't stop at age they are also, homaphobic, zenaphobic and sexist and thats just the tip of the iceburg!!!

Sorry but have to disagree with the comments below. No expertise and no thought - just a wee narrow rant. I could write more in criticism than you wrote as a 'review', but let us take just one point.

You write "qualifications for the job, and the experience then, he is the man (sic) for the job". ABSOLUTE RUBBISH !!!! When making appointments, you usually have a number of people who satisfy those requirements. A very important quality to look for is "potential", and this is one quality which (all other things being equal) the younger applicants have a better chance of having.

So, sorry, this is one of my few 'NU' ratings. Your extension of insults is also 'not appropriate'.... So dinna get ME started on the Continentals French/German/Italians/Gr eeks/etc. who all have their peculiarities that you seem to admire so much ...

Shame it was so short - it sounds as though you had quite a bit more to say on the subject (though a quick spellcheck would have helped, too). I believe Australia does indeed outlaw age discrimination, so it can be done - why not here?
