Jean Alesi Discussion

Newest Review: ... his fiery Latin temperament sometimes produced some strange results. In total Jean Alesi raced in 201 Grand Prixs and this is an enormous number considering the risks taken and the commitment that is required by an F1 driver. It is a shame that he did not complete his final race due to a crash. I wonder what would have happened if Michael Schumacher had been in the lead and Jean was in second place, if Michael would have let him pass for his final race. I think that would have been a very popular win. This final year has been unusual with Alesi changing teams in mid-season when he moved from Prost to Jordan. I understand that Jordan h... more

It is a pity that Jean Alesi has retired from Formula One racing, although I think he has probably made the right choice, at the right time. In his F1 career this Frenchman has raced for Tyrrell (1989 – 1990), Ferrari (1991 – 1995), Benetton (1996 – 1997), Sauber (1998 – 1999), Prost (2000 – 2001) and Jordan (2001). In all of his races I always felt that Jean Alesi was 100% committed to racing, although his fiery Latin temperament sometimes produced some strange results. Jean Alesi retires aged 37 at the end of the 2001 season and will be sadly missed by f1 fans. He will be replaced by a new Japanese driver Takuma Sato. He started driving in 1989 and will have raced in 201 races. In his entire race career he has had only one win. He has had two poles and 32 podium postions. He started his f1 career with Tyrell after being the 1987 f3 champion and the 1989 international f3000 champion. He moved to Ferrari in 1991, where he stayed until 1995. It was at the 1995 Canadian grand prix where he got his one win. This wasn't enough to keep him at Ferrari and so he moved to Bennetton. After this he moved to Sauber, then signed ...  Read the complete review

Jean Alesi: The end of an era (405 words)

The 2001 Japanese Grand Prix was Jean Alesi's 201st and final F1 race. In a career that has spanned 12 years Alesi has won just one Grand Prix, the 1995 race in Canada, for Ferrari. There is little doubt that this is a poor return for one of the most talented drivers of a generation. His f1 career saw him start at Tyrrell in 1989. His debut saw him finish in an outstanding 4th place. After two years he moved to Ferrari where his Sicilian ancestry and outward showings of passion mad him a hit with the Tifosi. In 1996 he moved to Benetton where in 1997 he acheived his highest World Championship finish of 3rd. After this he moved further down the grid to ...  Read the complete review

Hasn't done his ability justice (366 words)

Jean Alesi is one of F1's survivors and after 12 years in the sport, he is also one of the longest-serving drivers. He began his career aged 19 in the French Renault 5 GT Turbo Cup and graduated to French Formula 3 in 1986, winning the Championship in 1987. He then moved to International F3000 and won the 1989 title with Eddie Jordan's team. That year a mid-season F1 drive came up at Tyrrell and Alesi took it, finishing fourth in his first Grand Prix at his home race in France. He got the seat full-time for the following season and in 1991 moved up to drive for Ferrari - a dream come true for the French-Sicilian. Despite winning only one race (the 1995 ...  Read the complete review

If ever there was a modern day story about a Formula One driver where his World Championship winning speed and flair went unrewarded, then Frenchman Jean Alesi would be cast as the main star. There has never been any doubt about Alesi's natural ability and commitment, and never any doubt that he is among the Schumacher's, Hakkinen's and Villeneuve's in terms of pure speed...but sadly for Jean his career is the story of missed opportunities and ill-fortune. If Jean Alesi were to retire from Formula One with just one victory to his name (that superb Canadian GP of 1995) then it would be a sad and unjustified reflection on one of Formula One's most ...  Read the complete review
