Advantages: Low visual impact, Easy maintenance, Small machine
Disadvantages: -
Not all wind turbines need be noisy, large and ugly. There is room for small machines which can be owned by the end-users. Iskra WTM is a new business established to manufacture small wind turbines. Read all about them at www,iskrawind.com. It is run by engineers with many years' varied experience, some in the wind turbine industry. Their first model, the AT5-1 Turbine, currently has its prototype spinning happily in Derbyshire, where it will power a farm's holiday cottages. It has a 5kW generator rating, and is intended for farms, small communities, campsites, remote locations and communities in developing countries which have no other access to electricity. The energy capture of the AT5-1 turbine is unusually high at low wind speeds, thus making wind energy generation feasible at locations where the average wind speed is low. Its tower can be lowered to make maintenance easy and the blades are specifically optimised for low wind speed operation. It has an unobtrusive profile and low noise. It would be ideal for places too remote to be on the grid, as well as other small enterprises hoping to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. The prototype is now doing well, and production models should be available soon. See the website for further information.

- 25/02/02 An interesting op. I didn't know that these small turbines existed. |
