Modern medicine is a miracle in and of itself. The immense power that it commands in today's society is testament to the power of myth and mystery. Our health beliefs have now become something akin to religion and the doctors and researchers its priests.
The miracles that medicine claims to work are a far cry from the almost humble teaching of Hippocrates. The profession uses a language so obscure as to make it almost impenetrable to the lay person and initiation into its mysteries is tightly controlled and elitist.

Many of you will have been patients in hospital and will recall the skill and dedication of the medical and nursing staff. some will have had less pleasant experiences of misdiagnosis or innapropriate medical intervention. The latter is especially true of those who have recently given birth in this country.

Medicine as a profession is sick. It is a victim of its own high standing in the world of healthcare. The crisis of authority suffered by its members translates into the "God complex" we see in senior doctors and the tendency to ride roughshod over the wishes of patients, some of whom are powerless to resist.

Many alternative health practices have been shown to deliver excellent results in the treatment of illnesses. Some of the more enlightened members of the medical profession pay lip service to the validity of these treatment philosophies but the establishment as a whole ignores them or dismisses their achievements as nothing but an affront to the authority of the physician.

Having worked in healthcare for my entire working life I have seen miracles happen. I have seen the blind be made to see. I have borne witness to such miracles as heart transplants and dramatic recovery from the horror that is cancer. Yet I have also stood and watched many smaller miracles, as vital and beautiful to see as the dramatic stitching in of a new heart.

These smaller miracles that go unnoticed by the d
octors. The way in which patients are helped to deal with the consequences of their heart transplant are a prime example, the mouth ulcers, the gradual return to an active life, the immense courage that it takes to begin your life again. I have seen an old woman who had been spoon fed for years pick up her fork and eat for the first time and the sight of it moved me to tears.
The miracle of healing is not something that any doctor can lay claim to.

The real miracles are accomplished by the very people who need them most. The patients. Let no one tell you otherwise.

If you are a patient considering the pros and cons of alternative therapies then don't let anyone stand in the way of your choice.

It is you who are the miracle worker and it is for you, and only you to decide who will help you to achieve this.
