Advantages: fights always go the distance

Disadvantages: not really enough violence for a so-called blood sport

Amateur boxing is as different from professional boxing as two sports that aim to concuss an opponent can be. The first difference you will notice is that the amateurs wear a padded headgear designed to protect the athlete from head shots. And I thought you were supposed to be trying to knock the other guy out...

The next difference that jumps out at you is the glove design. The gloves for amateurs are more padded, again to reduce injury, and the knuckle area is white. In order for a boxer to score he must hit the opponent with the white part of the glove.

Since knockouts are very infrequent (and not expected) because of all the padding and safety gear, more attention is paid to scoring. If professional boxing is an all-out hack and slash swordfight, amateur boxing is a bit of light fencing.

Your opinion is very informative and useful..but I must disagree with you.
Being an amateur boxer myself, I know what is involved. And there is a lot of pain involved despite more padding than the professional game.
If somebody hits you hard enough, there's no doubt you are going down - it's just that the mentality is different and there is more emphasis on technique and speed than just brute force. Try it out and you will then know just how much hard work and effort is needed to succeed.

A well written piece though.
