I decided to write this story in amateur boxing, and not in Is Boxing worth the risk, because what I'm going to write is a true account of a boy, who live changed through taking up boxing. The Boy. The boy in question is actually my older brother, when we were at school, he was always bullied and picked on, even by children younger than him. He was a tall lad for his age, however he was over-weight. I don't believe he was picked on because of his weight, but because he was shy and not very confident. It was as though he was wearing a label that said, "Pick on me." I'm ashamed to say that he embarrassed me. You see I've always been a confident person, and I've never let anybody walk over me. On numerous occasions, I told him to fight back, let them see you're no wimp. He wouldn't listen to me. Even when a boy smacked him across the face, he just stood there and cried he didn't even attempt to hit the lad back. I told my dad about the incident, and he spoke to my brother about it, but to no avail, I know for a fact that my dad couldn't accept the fact that his son was this way. I suppose it's a man thing. That was when I decided to try and help him. The only trouble was how. Then one day when I was in town, I noticed a boxing club, outside was a sign that said, "New members always welcome." Maybe, just maybe this could be the thing he needs. That night I asked him if he'd ever thought of taking up boxing. At first, it was as though I asked him to commit suicide, but eventually I convinced him to take a look. The next day I escorted him to the club, and we went in and had a look around, there was so many people there of all ages, and everyone was really friendly towards him. After half an hour, I left him to it. When he came home later that day, I'd never seen him so happy, he couldn't stop talking about the place, and apparently, he'd
made quite a few new friends. I asked him if he was going again, and he immediately replied "Yes." After this point, he never looked back. At first he found it hard, as it's quite a physically demanding sport, that's requires a lot of stamina, because he was so serious about boxing, my mum and dad bought him a home gym, and every morning he would go jogging without fail. During the first year he'd lose most of his matches, but as he got fitter, he started to win. Before he took up the sport he was just an over-weight kid, but after a year he was six foot of solid muscle. The change was incredible, as these changes took place people at school started to treat him different, people wanted to know him, the bullying stopped, and people had respect for him. I suppose you could say he turned his life upside down. He still boxes now, and he is good at it, he has a tremendous physic and he is known to his friends as Big Mick. I dread to think what might have happened to him if I'd never persuaded him to join the club, the chances are he would have gone through his life as a target for bullies. He would have always been the underdog. Not everybody is naturally out-going or confident, sometimes they need something to bring them out of themselves. For my brother it was boxing. I believe that many boys could benefit from this sport, although it does require commitment. Some people may argue about the health risks involved in boxing, my answer to this is that my brother was hit and punched on a regular basis at school, and it wasn't just a few taps, sometimes he would be quite badly beaten. In my opinion, being a boxer is a better opinion; he is super-fit, doesn't smoke and eats the best food. I believe I have played a significant role in changing his life for the better.
