Hello, my name is Mike and I have been a keen radio amateur for over 25 years, my Amateur radio callsign is G8VHB A question I am often asked when people find out about my amateur radio hobby is ?What is this amateur radio all about is it like CB?? As a recent newcomer to the Radio Amateur hobby can I say what a disturbing lack of young members there seem to be, being attracted into this hobby. Is it because we are all thought of as 'anoraks', possibly so - having been to a couple of rallys it would be easy to think like that... Is it because there is too much cost involved? I doubt it, I know how much my children spend on telephone calls... Is it because the UK's RSGB is a little out of touch? I fear that may be it. As a community radio presenter I wonder if I am considered an amateur? I suppose I must do as I don't get paid. So what do I do and why do I do it? I am an extrovert in an introvert sort of way. It is great just sitting in a shed (not quite BBC style) talking about whatever I want to and playing whatever music I want without a care in the world. I used to record my shows but now I am live, it's great. There is nothing like going live to give that adrenaline rush because I know I run the risk of spitting out my false teeth, slipping out a banned swear word or getting my knickers in a twist.
