Advantages: Absolutely none.
Disadvantages: Cruel, health problems, needless
We bought our dog from a Puppy Shop in Nottingham about 10 years ago. At the time, we just wanted a black labrador retriever and didn't really think anything of going to a Specialist Pet Shop to buy one. The dogs in the Pet Shop acted very strangly for puppies. They didn't seem at all interested in us as we peered into their kennels. They all seemed rather depressed. That was apart from our dog. She was bouncy and dying to come out and meet us. Once the door was opened, she came bounding out and jumped straight into my arms. It seemed that she had never seen a human before. She was lovely and we bought her and took her home. When we got home, we gave her some milky tea, as advised by the shop owners. Our poor puppy had terrible tummy problems as we were soon to discover. She was allergic to dairy products and also required a gluten free diet. Yet, the shop owners had obviously ignored the fact that she had food allergies and out poor puppy must have suffered for at least 2 weeks at their hands. We think that she must have come from a puppy farm, as she came from Wales. She is an absolutely gorgeous dog with a lovely temperament and a great personality. To think that she may have been mistreated and regarded only as profit is disgusting. What her poor mother must have gone through is even a more frightening thought. Her mother must have been poorly matched and bred, as our dog has many skin problems and food allergies. It is cruel and should be stopped. For the sake of an animal which is pleasing to the eye is not worth the suffering endured by these animals. I would never buy a dog again from a pet shop, I do not want to support htis senseless activity. It wouldn't take much to be kind to the dogs. I would recommend that if you want a Pedigree dog, to buy it from a reputable home breeder where you can look at the parents first and the conditions in which they live.

- 31/08/01 Glad to hear that your lovely Lab is thriving now. :-)
I certainly agree that puppy farms are dreadful places. Not only are the puppies at risk, but what happens to the mothers after they've been bred from to the point of exhaustion? It breaks my heart to even think of it. |

- 31/08/01 My dog is still bouncy and nuts and that's labradors for you. I would like another dog but I have to work and it wouldn't be kind. My mum looks after our dog during the day. Perhaps a cat or an indoor rabbit would be nice. |
