Gagged and bound (Are Britain's censorship laws too strict?)

About a year ago I wrote my dissertation on the return of the film 'The Exorcist'. This involved investigating how the film was received the first time around. Up until then, I had never realised the severity of censorship in this country. Or indeed, how it is administered. I feel truly violated that the films and videos I watch are cut by people who are neither voted in by the general public or who are accountable to anyone but the film industry itself. I acknowledge that there should be some form of regulation in the film industry to ensure that children don't end up watching unsuitable material but I object that what I watch as an adult is censored beyond my control. That essentially, someone else decides what I can and can't watch. The worst thing is though, that so few people realise how prolific censorship in the media really is - that most of what you watch in films has been carefully vetted to make sure there isn't too much gore or sex. I suggest that anyone wishing to find out how much media censorship there is read a book called 'Censored' by Tom Dewe Matthews. Summary: |
