Advantages: 16 year olds can have access to porn at same age as they can consent to sex

Disadvantages: n/a

YES THIS IS A CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC, AND YES I AM GOING TO GIVE MY POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIOL OP ANYWAY!

My opinion is based on what i personally call logic, others may say it is just silly, i don't particulary worry what you choose to say.

I personally think that the age ratings on pornography, whether hard or softcore, should be dropped to 16 in the UK, i say this for a number of reasons, and i hope that you may see at least a little bit of logic behind them in a couple of seconds!

Firstly, in the United Kingdom, the age of consent is 16, therefore teenagers of the age 16 can do whatever they like as regards sex, and let's face it, more often than not, they take advantage of the chance!

Secondly, pornography is easily available for those who are prepared to go out and look for it, even tv stations on satellite channels show it at various times of the day, so why is there such a big issue of people having to be 18 before they can legally gain access to such material, during my days in lower school i easily had access to porn, and i never even broke a sweat in attempt to get it!

HOWEVER! I DO NOT THINK THAT JUST BECAUSE ACCESS SHOULD BE GRANTED TO 16 YR OLDS, THAT PEOPLE AT THE AGE OF 16 SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BE A PART OF THE FILM, I THINK THAT AGE SHOULD BE KEPT AT 18! I think this because i believe that although legally allowed to have sex in privacy, there is a huge difference in being able to have sex, and being able to have sex on camera, for most 16 year olds, there would be huge mental, and i suppose physical strains, to go with making the films.

We have also got the small matter of the little thing that we are using at this precise moment in time, namely the internet. Let's face it, anybody who can use a search engine, can find as much free pornography as they like, and whatever type of pornography that they "desire" (excuse me, i tried to think of a better word). Lets face it, if y
ou try to go on any kind of smutty web site, the security actions they take to restrict people who are under 18 from accessing the site is ridiculously low, normally you just get a little button askin if you are 18 or not, with a yes and no button, lets face it, there aren't many under age people, who are actually looking for porn on the interne, that will click no are there?

So, anyway, if you wish to criticise this opinion, then please do so, this is after all, my opinion, and i have voiced it, controversial as it may seem!

I think it's naive to believe that making porn accessable to a younger age group will lower teen pregnancy - only education can do that! (see tuftyclub comment below)

I appreciate that you feel porn ought to be available to 16 year olds - but I feel like you need to explain in greater depth exactly why they are mature enough to watch anything yet not participate.

Do you also believe that film censorship laws should be reviewed reducing the 18 certificate to 16?

I believe that the censorship currently lies for pornography at 18 because at 18 you are legally an adult and are considered responsible for your own actions. I also think that yes, the majority of 16 year olds are perfectly capable of deciding if they wish to watch porn, but there will always be the odd few who are not really emotionally stable enough. By keeping the censorship at 18 it levels the numbers out a bit.

You could also argue that with Britain having the worst teenage pregnancy in Europe and porn being only available to people of 18 and over - why not raise the age of conscent to 18! Solve a few problems all in one go!

Good Op though, certainly provoked some good comments

You could 've expanded your argument a bit more but still I'm giving this a VU because you've made the main points well and to be fair yours would seem to be sensible approach to the matter.

I agree with Dave, laws should be tightened to stop CHILDREN getting access to it. And lets not forget that 16 is not the age of consent for all, for gay men it is still 18.
I've always wondered why though....
