Are Ghosts Real?
Advantages: hard to say
Disadvantages: hard to say
This is a question which is always going to be difficult to answer as people will have their own opinion... some will believe all the time whilst all will believe some of the time...
There are many reviews regarding this question so I thought I'd put my two pence worth in....
I for one am a believer as there have been just too many 'sightings' and 'events' to simply ignore. From thousands of different people all around the world, and not just from winos who see big yellow elephants crossing the road, but from all sorts of people, from warehouse workers to doctors, from haulage workers to taxi drivers...
I have heard and read many stories about ghostly happenings and have always taken them with a pinch of salt, although I am a believer, I simply like to listen and make my own opinion...
But apart from the stories I have heard I even have had a few 'experiences' of my own which I for one have never been able to explain... for instance, whilst walking in a large well known park in Manchester one earlyish evening with a few friends we saw what looked like a figure walking towards us in the distance which simply seemed to vanish in front of our eyes... as there were no nearby trees or dips in the ground we simply couldn't work out where the figure had gone...???
But my most convincing experience was even more confusing, and somewhat more frightening indeed...
Allow me to take you back into my past for a while...
In may 1983 a friend and myself were told about ghostly noises being heard from a derelict building near an old roman lake. The building was apparently used as a hospital during world war 2 and was supposedly haunted by several spirits, so we decided to spend a few nights there to see if these spirits were real. (what with us being young and somewhat stupid)
The four story building was very well secured with all the windows boarded up by the local authorities, it's crumbling walls black from years of neglect. The only entrance being round the back along a thin ledge with a 70 metre shear drop onto rocks below, but we had climbed worse than this before so we were familiar with the dangers.
Once inside it was pitch black due to the boarded up windows, our torches giving the only source of light, we knew we were alone but we set up some simple warning traps anyway, using pieces of string and thin milk bottles.
For the first few hours it was silent, we could just about hear the birds whistling outside, the solid walls muffling the outside world, then suddenly we heard a nose from the floor directly above us. We froze, staring up to the ceiling, listening, it sounded at first like a shuffling noise, almost like some thing being dragged along the floor, then a sudden loud thud.
We got to our feet and quietly made for the stairs, still listening to the noises coming from above, the noises seeming to merge. The thudding noise was almost stamping like, followed by the dragging noise so we hurried up the stairs towards the room which the noises were coming from, our torches only just lighting the way.
At the back of my mind I was thinking that maybe some one else was in the building, some one was playing a bit of a trick on us, but I think I was simply trying reassure myself.
We stopped outside the room which we knew the noises were coming from and listened, still hearing the shuffling noise through the aged broken door.
As I grabbed the door handle, ready to push the door open we were both startled slightly by a sudden banging noise coming from inside, but undeterred I pushed the door open, shining our torches into the room. The room seemed empty, apart from the dust, so we slowly walked in, but on closer inspection we noticed wide drag marks along the floor, reaching from the door to the window, outside the window lay a very high drop onto rocks below.
We both thought that some one was playing tricks on us but we could not explain how some one had got out of the room with out us seeing them. As we stood there we could just about make out another noise coming from a room opposite, this was a faint scratching noise, probably rats, but we had to go and have a look, just to be sure. We could still hear the scratching as we walked into the room that the noise was coming from but there was nothing in there, nothing at all. Another sudden thudding noise from behind making us both jump. This was the point where we both decided that spending the night in that building may have been a bad decision, but we had to stay, we had a reputation, sort of. We made a quick decision to search the entire building, from bottom to top, just in case any one was playing some sort of trick on us. We stopped in our tracks as a sudden tremendous thud echoed through the entire place, a loud dragging sound quickly followed, the sounds were coming from the room directly opposite where we were standing, the room we originally heard the dragging noises, the room we had just looked into and seen nothing, we went back to have another look, again finding the room empty.
We had heard rumours that during the world war 2 a man, possibly a jealous American soldier, had dragged a nurse across the room and thrown her out of the window, onto the jagged rocks below, because she had spurned his advances. We did not know how true these rumours were but from the noise we heard at the time the rumours coincided. We decided to give up chasing the ghost and spent the night listening to the weird and wonderful noise coming from the building in the pitch dark.
Yes...I admit...I was terrified, wondering what was creating all the thudding and the scraping, wondering what was causing the hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end. By the time the morning came around we had recorded two hundred and forty seven different noises ranging from scratching, probably by rats, to loud thudding, cause unknown.
As dawn approached we climbed from the building through the same window we had entered, vowing to return with more equipment to get more results but this came to nothing as not long after someone purchased the property and turned it into a retirement home, but I've always wondered to this day whether the noises can still be heard.
Well, that's my story of one of my experiences with the supernatural... and believe me I have a few more to tell, (but I'll save them for my book LOL)...
Anyway, back to the question at hand... Are Ghost Real..?
Well in my experience I would have to say yes, or at least there is something there, on a different plain so to speak, or just maybe it's a persons mind that plays tricks on them, enough to make them believe that there is something in the supernatural.... There are just so many stories about spirits roaming on a different plain for ghosts not to exist...Millions of people can't be wrong.
I now I haven't really answered the question but who can..? It is one of them questions which will never be answered for sure... a little like life after death or even god.
But I hope my little story may make you think that things do go bump in the night... either that or you may simply think I need stronger medication...
People will always have there own opinion about ghost, just as they will have about Aliens or conspiracy theories.... But the truth will never really be known.
Summary: If you saw one would you scream...???
