Are Traditional Games Being Replaced?Newest Review: ... games like tennis and bowls. But unfortunately she participates in these sports on the Wii. I must admit I suppose I am just nostalgic regarding my own childhood. My mum would work in the evenings and my dad would turn the lights off and we would play hide and seek in the dark. I will always remember these fantastic fun times. Simple, free games that would provide hours of fun. Another ... more |

After spending Yesterday trawling around the shops for hours, trying to find things for Christmas for my two children. I am compelled to ask what happened to good old fashioned family games? It seems to me that today's children are not interested in any games unless it is of the electronic variety. I actually bought snakes and ladders, draughts and connect four for my nine year old daughter last Christmas and apart from playing the connect four game about twice. The draughts and snakes and ladders are in her bedroom unopened. She will play traditional games like tennis and bowls. But unfortunately she participates in these sports on the ... I know this is in the wrong category i could not find one to suit it and when looking under archive 'unwanted gifts' came up so.... I thought it quite ironic to place it here! It is actually about my experience of ecstasy, given to me against my will, i suppose if you were mad you could call it an unwanted gift? I didn't want it, and it was given to me...Well its the closest i can get, without over justifying my choice of category, oops too late! Me and my sister often used to play these games and have great fun laughing, hitting each other and calling each other names as siblings do. This all ended however, when my Dad made the mistake of buying a Sega Megadrive one Christmas. My sister became instantly addicted. She would get home from school, switch on the Sega and not move again until bedtime. She actually lived for a year only on pizza because it was easy to eat pizza and play at the same time. So while we ate our roast beef she would stare at the screen and chew ... Read the complete review

In my house, there is a place for technological fun but it will always exist along side traditional games. I was one of six children and we played games together a great deal both out and indoors. We played all the usual things like cricket and other ball games including Tin Can Tommy which was a rather elaborate variety of hide and seek. I was a pretty mean skipper and to see me with a hula-hoop was a sight to behold! We were all brought up playing cards and board games too from the earliest possible age. When I had my own children, two sons and a daughter, we played many of the same games but by then technology had reached us, so I guess they ... Read the complete review

YES! Can I stop now? Well it seems like a pretty stupid question and I do not think that anyone could come up with a different answer and then argue it effectively enough for anyone else to take note. It is quite simply the case that children would much rather plug a cartidge into a Playstation or switch on the PC than pull out a board game or leave the house and play hide and seek. And who can really blame them. Whether it is a good thing or a bad thing is a different issue. You can look and say that playing board games with the family helps cement family bonds and interpersonal skills. Playing hide and seek, cowboys and indians etc. ... Read the complete review
