After months of trawling travel agents and internet sites I thought I would try it on my own.

So I contacted hotels that had been recommended by friends, families or acquaintances via E mail and have had excellent results. I found their addresses by ringing them or looking up their details on the internet, the majority of businesses have e mail nowadays.

I asked for details for the cost of stays, what's included etc and booked myself. It has cost only a fraction of the cost that I would have paid in the travel agents.

I then contacted various airlines or brokers and found a cheaper flight. I did the same for the travel insurance, I am sick and tired of paying through the nose for insurance that they say is compulsory if you want to take advantage of their promotions.

I have saved half of the total cost that I would have paid. The hotel, airline company and insurance have all confirmed the deal in writing and via e-mail, so I'll have correspondence with names and details that I can take with me should there be any problems.

So sunny Barbados here we come. It's worth giving it a go, it takes a few days to get it all sorted but then you could spend just as long hiking up and down the High Street.
