Advantages: Good managerial record
Disadvantages: Petty comments, moans all the time
Arsene Wenger is one of the most respected coaches in world football. So why then does he constantly feel the need to come out with his regular outbursts, which say a great deal more about himself than his intended targets. You can call it psychology, mind-games, whatever. I just call it petty and annoying. As a fan of Manchester United, you might expect that I wouldn't be Wenger's biggest admirer. I can appreciate how well he has done in English football, winning the Double a couple of seasons ago, but I am sick of the comments he comes out with regarding other teams in the Premiership. His particular blindspot is obviously for United. Witness his recent comments about how Tony Adams is a better English captain than Beckham, how teams lay down for the Reds while playing at the top of their game against Arsenal, and how Van Nistelrooy was a waste of money. Just some of the comments Wenger has come out with in the past. For someone who spent £13m on Sylvain Wiltord, on whom the jury is still out, to criticise any other club's spending is hypocritical. More recently he has accused Leeds of being mad for spending £18m on Rio Ferdinand. Why can't he just keep his mouth shut? When it comes to his own team however, Wenger can never see anything wrong. Time after time he has been "unable to see" controversial incidents involving his players. The disciplinary record of his players in previous seasons has been little short of appalling, and maybe he should spend his time putting his house in order before criticising others. With Arsenal currently going through a rough patch, he should get back to what he does best, managing, and leave the slanging match to the latest boy-bands.

- 03/02/01 Well, since Adams has now retired, the question is somewhat academic. The point is, if Adams was the United player and Beckham at Arsenal, I doubt he would be pushing Adams cause quite as much...
And Beckham has already achieved much more in his career than Adams ever did. |

- 01/02/01 He's right. Beckham can't hold a candle to Tony Adams!!
He's only a spoilt little boy. How could he be expected to lead men! |

- 16/12/00 As soon as I saw the title I started larfing!
I'm no FU supporter, but some of what you say is true, and he probably does it for comic effect - he's french you know.
Being a Londoner I keep abreast of all the London teams [not that any one of them is my Main team!] and I have to say his antics are worth watching!
He' ;s a good coach, mind you. |
