The U.S government already has a way of destroying meteorites, as long as they are not huge. They haven't released the maximum size that a meteorite can be, for them to be able to destroy it and I don't think they will any time soon, since the system they use is highly classified.
Ever heard of HAARP. It was build from the idea of Nikola Tesla, who wanted to use it to provide the world with free energy by taking energy from the ionosphere, but instead the plans fell into the governments hands after Tesla's death. Anyway, HAARP (High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) is an array of antennas emitting ELFs (Extremely Low Frequencies) located in Alaska.
These antennas can do a lot of things, not the place to discuss them, but they all have to do with the ionosphere. They emitte ELFs, which have the same frequency with the ionosphere, and when they come in contact with the ionosphere they achieve a resonant frequency, which makes the ionosphere vibrate. Now these vibrations achieve a maximum amplitude due to the resonant frequency and expand the ionosphere further in to space. Then the atmosphere rushes in to fill the empty space that wasn't there before and instead of the earths atmosphere having an oval shape, as the earth does, as it does normally, now it has an oval shape with a lump on it. A lump that expands way out there.
Now the way that small asteroids are destroyed before they hit the earth is due to the friction created between the asteroid and the atmosphere. Which heats up the asteroid and melts it, that's what the tail of fire they have behind them is, thus not reaching the earth's surface.
So now imagine, instead of having a distance y (from when the meteorite enters our atmosphere to the surface of the earth) now you have a distance 10y. It would melt an even bigger meteorite, never letting it to hit the earth.
But panic is good for the government's plans, they get to pass stupid laws and new taxes to supposedly solve the new problem, they wouldn't tell you they have anything like this until after they use it.
