Advantages: Advantages?
Disadvantages: The whole event!
Sitting in a hotel conference room at about 4.00 Tuesday evening our tutor walks back in and says in a solemn voice – “Guys, there’s been a newsflash – 2 planes have crashed into the World Trade Buildings in New York killing almost 50,000 people”. What? How? We thought it wasn’t true – there was no implication in a newspaper or anywhere that such horror was going to happen. We were in a hotel for three days and had no idea of what was going on anywhere else in the world apart from our training course until we looked at the TV. What was going on in London? Were they actually evacuating the city? Would Canary Warf be going through the same thing in a few moments? And the most painful feeling of all was knowing that our friend (who was with us at the hotel) had two cousins who worked on the 92nd floor of that building. She was just hoping that they went into work late that day (even though they started at 7.30am) I can’t even imagine what she’s going through now. This event has happened thousands of miles away but still effects us dramatically. But why? I think humans are rather selfish in a way when they are onlookers of such a tragedy. Thousands of miles away we think – “I was there last week – oh my god!” “Oh no my friend/relative lives near there”, “They work on that building”. We automatically think how such an event has directly affected us. Then when we find it hasn’t we get frustrated we can’t do anything to help apart from pray and hope for the best. What it does bring out, however, is the generosity and humane instincts that people – “civilians” even, have for one another in a time of crisis. Today we witnessed over 800 million people take part in a three minutes silence in respect for this tragedy. We see a long queue outside a Red Cross centre in the US full of people wanting to give blood. We hear people̵
7;s frustration here when we can’t even give blood – America thinks we all have CJD. It also shows us how important the Television is in our everyday lives – we now live in a global community and terrorists can benefit from this achieving worldwide attention and chaos. The world is afraid – we have every right to be afraid. These people had such strong beliefs that they were willing to die for their cause. And if they’re willing to die for it they respect that much more than themselves – let alone anyone else’s life. If people are prepared to do this then anything can happen. And even if Bin Laden is found guilty (found even!) how would America punish him? If they kill him do they realise that his followers will fight back with even more hatred in their hearts? At the moment people – including myself are very frustrated and completely rethinking their outlook on life and the world itself. It is in my nature to give everyone a second chance, the benefit of the doubt. Although what has happened was terrible I still think people are good. The terrorists, in their minds, were “Freedom Fighters” – they felt oppressed by the capitalist world who had so much power over their society. They felt that they’re voices were not heard and acted upon – so they went to extremes. Now, I’m not justifying what they have done and I’m not calling them “good” – just putting into perspective that what they thought they were doing was right. The Nazis believed that they were doing right by murdering killing millions of men, women and children – these terrorists believe the same thing – especially is it means that they’re voice will be heard no matter how callous their actions. I, amongst many others, will never forget the shocking images of the planes crashing into the World Trade buildings. After all we’ve learnt and seen in the 20
th century, how can human beings still do this to each other? Nothing will ever be the same after these atrocious events. Noone will ever think the same after knowing what went on that Tuesday. If war breaks out then who will it be against? If war breaks out who will win? The only good thing that comes out of this is that the whole world will be aware of terrorism and it’s capabilities, and have the chance to ally and destroy it once and for all. If we don’t fight against it then such horror will happen again. The feeling of freedom at the moment has disappeared. With such invisibility of the enemy paranoia and hatred kicks in. Something needs to be done about it and will be done about it. But whatever it is we will all be encouraged to hate the enemy – who we cant even identify at the moment.

- 02/10/01 oops I didnt explain myself about the nazis etc - sorry. Basically what these people had in commen was that no matter how awful their actions it was for the good of mankind. In their minds what they were doing was good. And when people dont know the justified difference between right and wrong the possibilities are endless

- 01/10/01 Good op, although I totally undertand the point your trying to make I dont know if I would agree with the comparisons to the nazis as I think that was a very different type of situation and I dont believe the hatred they felt would drive them to kill themselves for the "cause", and that is the really frustrating/terrifying thing about this type of terrorism ... how do you stop someone who is so willing to kill themselves? No amount of security can ever stop that, how for example could you stop them simply walking into a shopping mall or the underground with a bomb and blowing themselves and hundreds of others away, you cant. Who knows what the answer is but we can only hope and pray that someone comes up with a solution before more innocents lose their lives. Ooops, sorry to ramble on, should have made this an op !! |
