The attacks on America, an issue and topic that has definitely affected all of our lives in the past week, and something that will go down in history, and will never be forgotten. The fact that discussions of war are now all over our news programmes and papers shows that these attacks were not a good idea, especially in the view of the people of Afghanistan, the country that will probably end up in a ‘holy war’ with out American cousins. Naturally I am dead against war, and I was absolutely stunned by what had happened in the USA, I think it touched everyone of us, and made us think how fragile and precious life is – some people have lost theirs, some 20,000 are thought to be dead as a result of the horrific hijacking of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Centre, into the Pentagon as well as the other plane (or planes) that were shot down, or were crashed down. Images will stay in our minds for a very long time, and I hope you took part in the national 3minute silence on the Friday after the disaster. So, what is going on with society? Is it so hard to accept that people have different beliefs and religions? Is this all what it comes down to? Acceptance? Violence and racial dispute is going on across the world, and the UK is no exception. Everyone is the same in that everyone is different. I have heard this many times, and yet why do we find it SO hard to accept this common similarity? Maybe we’re scared or maybe we can’t comprehend change, difference and something that might not agree with what we believe. I just hope that the world learns from what has happened. We’ll live in a peaceful, free of war world. Seen the television shots, photos in the papers, and you’ve heard the news. You’ve heard what Mr Bush has to say, and yet the whole issue of terrorism is not as straight forward as it seems, like many things in life. The IRA – one of the most infamous terrorist groups i
n the world, people that are responsible for bombings in the UK, and possibly more. Tony Blair says we are at war against terrorism, that we back America, and yet the USA is partly responsible for the IRA? Why is Mcdonald’s giving a percentage of their profits to fund the IRA? I don’t know the whole story behind that, but why is this being ignored? Bin Laden. Most hated man on earth since Hitler? Who knows, but this man is the prime suspect behind the travesty that has happened in New York and in the USA. I am still in shock of what has happened and all of my sympathy and condolences go to the families that have lost loved ones and friends, and I hope that things can return to as near normal as humanely possible. But why us war going to break out? Resolution to happen as soon as possible will be the best bet for humanity, if war breaks out, more people will die, more innocent people. What can happen now, what ‘will’ happen? Will Afghanistan become even worse off with more starvation and more poverty, but what can one United Kingdom citizen do to prevent war, but what can anyone do? Does Tony Blair’s decision revolve around what the country thinks because I’m sure as hell I haven’t been asked about my views - war on Afghanistan is not war on Terrorism, it is war on a nation, and it will only create a thousand people like Bin Laden. Be good, don’t dwell on a fear of war breaking out, instead do something to help prevent this. The next couple of months could be very, very important indeed. Justice? Or revenge? In my view, I would have voted for Al Gore as president. Anyway, thanks for reading. Attacks on America suck big time, and I hope things are resolved soon. The world does not need more Bin Laden’s, we need more Mandela’s and more respect. VOODOO MAN.

- 05/10/01 Well thought out op. I think when you talk about war it only causes more bad feelings because you aren't killing the terrist. You are killing innocent people that had nothing to do with the attack on the ll Sept. There has got to be a better way. I do believe the terrist and only the terrist should pay but no one else. Thanks for sharing. |
