September 11th has come and gone. The rescuers at the World Trade Centers have been called off despite their protests - the firemen and police officers still have brothers buried somewhere in the remains of what was once a glorious set of buildings, but it has become too dangerous to allow them to continue digging through the rubble.

The once-familiar New York skyline now features an enormous missing gap - the place in the atmosphere where these two "twin towers" filled the skyline. Back in the 70s, when they were finally through building these modern works of art, contructors and designers claimed that nothing could topple the towers - not even planes crashing into them. I suppose that, when the airplanes were mentioned way back then, they meant ACCIDENTAL collision - not deranged terrorists using our very own aircraft as weapons against us.

Thousands of lives have been lost, but billions have been changed since these attacks. We lost United States Army officers in the Pentagon - what was once thought to be the impregnable fortress of America. We have lost several thousand civilians in New York - men, women, and children who were simply going about the business of living a free lifestyle in a democratic country.

Indeed, a horrible thing has happened to the entire world. You see, it is not only America who has been deeply affected by this tragic series of events. People from nations and countries all over the world cried with us on the eleventh, and still tune in to radio and television for the latest information on America's quest for justice. We know, in our hearts, that Osama bin Laden has done terrible things - whether or not he is involved in the September 11th attacks, he IS guilty of terrorist acts in the past. We will either bring him to justice - or bring justice to him.

I would like to ask all readers to please, not hold the entire bin Laden family accountable for what just two of them have done.
Osama has over fifty siblings - they along with his parents turned their backs on this strange young man a long, long time ago. In fact, one of his brothers (a naturalized American citizen) cried just as hard as the other American citizens that were with him in an eatery when the news first hit the television set. He could not believe that someone, anyone, would do such a horrible thing to such a great country. None of us can honestly believe it: It's been SO long since any sort of war or battle was fought on our land. Pearl Harbor was the last - and one of the worst - but this new attack has definitely outdone it. More lives were lost. More damage has been inflicted. More people - a bigger, more populated America - have been deeply affected.

While American military forces attempt to flush out the man that we believe to be responsible for this tragedy, I ask that you all support them in your own way. Say prayers for these brave men and women, for they did not expect to utilize the training that they have undergone in years past. Our Special Forces are the best of the best - the most elite and talented men of our military branches. I was once in the Army, not long ago. I know what it is like to be trained not to think, but to simply obey. I fired rifles, crawled through dirt, and threw live grenades. But, I did not do this in hostile territory. I did not face any live enemies. I was in a safe, restricted Basic Training environment, with screaming Drill Sergeants watching over my shoulder to ensure that we were not putting ourselves or others in any kind of danger.
That is not nearly the same as being a Ranger - one of the Army's Special Forces - in Afghanistan. I can only imagine how thrilling, terrifying, and downright crazy it is for those men. They are on a mission, a task that they have been training for since they entered the Army. They will gladly do it - for their country and for their sense of pride - but it cannot poss
ibly be an easy task.

I personally do not agree with wars and battles. I honestly wish that the world were a safer, more peaceful place to raise children and live out the rest of our existences. However, this is not the case, at least not in this day and age. Terrorist groups attack each other - and I'm not talking about America exclusively. Israel and Palestine have been at each others' throats for SO long...it's terrible, but it is the way things are. We hope to change the world - "we" being young and idealistic people such as myself. But, we know we can only accomplish this one person at a time - beginning with ourselves.

So, with all of this in mind, I urge the world to please support the fight for freedom. While the American government IS slowly taking away rights and becoming an even larger entity than before, this is still home to billions of people. We are part of a democratic society, one in which we experience wonderful freedoms - freedoms that obviously come with consequences.

The terrorist acts committed against America are terrible, and most of the world has condemned them as well as the people behind them. I personally am encouraged by this - the world is united in a just cause, the cause to bring terrorists to their knees so that they cannot do any more harm to us or other countries, including their own. Many Americans have realized important things in the past few months - things such as the importance of freedom, family, and the love of our country.

We are grateful and appreciative to everybody who has stood in support of us in the wake of these horrible events. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support. It has proven, once again, that no man is an island - and that no country is isolated from the rest of the world, either!

A fellow American? Very cool. Another great op, by the way (and welcome to dooyoo too!). Two small points though; the rescuers haven't been called off. The firemen have been pulled and professional teams have been brought in for safety's sake. Also, when the towers were built the 767's that crashed into the buildings didn't exist, so in essence what they said was correct. Planes of the size they had then couldn't have brought down the towers. :) - Christiane

great op, I am very impressed with your writing, keep it up. The other significant thing about the world uniting is some of the individual countries who have joined in the condemnation, countries who usually opose Western opinions.

Loving your country is only important because it is the root of so many of the world's problems.
