Advantages: Good for teaching how to walk and babies love the independence
Disadvantages: Can be pricey
This is the type of baby product that you either love or hate. I love baby walkers for a number of reasons.
I think firstly they enable babies to become more steady on their feet and learn how to start taking steps. Walkers also help to strengthen babies legs and feet as they move around rooms.
I also love walkers because as a parent its so hard to get things done when you have a young baby so all you have to do is place your baby in the walker and as long as you are supervising them and have moved all loose items and furniture out of their way, you are free to carry on with the cleaning and washing.
Most walkers come with interactive toy boards that slot onto the walker tray and play music and games. The one my Daughter had was very bright in colour and had a waterproof, wipe-able seat which is great for any food or drink spillages. It also had a toy board with rattles on and a steering wheel and gear stick so was similar to a car. My Mum bought the walker for my Daughter as a present and it cost her £40.00 which isn't so bad as it can be used again or sold on.
I know there is a lot of bad press about walkers at the moment but in my opinion, as long as you make sure your rooms are safe and you don't allow your baby to use the walker upstairs without a secure safety gate then they are perfectly safe to use.
Summary: A great buy for babies who are ready to move
