Of course Nick Barmby should start on the "troublesome" left for England. He has played there week in and week out for Everton this season and has been highly praised for his perormances by just about everybody. Why, you may ask? He is terrrier like in midfield with a work rate to match anyone else you care to mention, he has developed a maturity to handle the expectations placed on him by team-mates, managers and fans alike and he does manage to chip in the odd useful goal.

His performances against Ukraine and Malta (where he was by far the best England player on view) underline this.

I can't help feeling that the only reason he didn't start against Portugal was because he plays for "unfashionable" Everton (yes, I'm an Everton fan!).
