Advantages: Good Manager

Disadvantages: No money

The options for Barnsley are to react in one of two ways. They can follow the lead of the previous season's losing play-off finalists Bolton and have a transitional campaign, ending in further play-off agony. Or they can follow the 1998 losing side's lead. That side was Sunderland, who garnered a record number of points in the next season.
Unfortunately, the records show that Sunderland kept hold of their best players. Barnsley have lost Craig Hignett and loan defender John Curtis, both to divisional rivals Blackburn. Nicky Eaden has also gone, though I hear that Birmingham's gain is not entirely Barnsley's loss. The creativity of Hignett is the biggest loss, if not of the whole division, certainly for Dave Bassett's side.
Bassett is losing his touch - he has taken only one team up since Sheffield United in 1990. The play-offs even appear out of sight, unless Bruce Dyer can show his form of the play-off win at Birmingham, rather than the patchy Dyer that the Tykes saw most of the rest of the time.
