Advantages: Love this game

Disadvantages: none

Basketball- I think it's the best American sport there is, there maybe timeouts and it gets stopped. But it's not as boring as baseball. And doesn't stop as much as American football. And hockey what's hockey?

The basic game - the game is played with leather ball about the same size as a football, but is much heavier and has much more grip as it is played with your hands. You have 5 players on each team on the court at once. But there are still players on the bench in the professional game.

The positions - there is the centre (C). This is usually the big guy at back who is usually around 6'10-7'6. There main role is to defend under the basket and grab the rebounds (a missed shot which comes off the basket/backboard). But lately they are starting to get quite a few points in the game such as Shaq O'Neal and Dwight Howard.

Power forward (PF). This position is also more to do with defence but still small enough to get a few points in the game. They are usually around 6'8- 7'0.

Small forward (SF). This position is a bit of both, some of which are score lots of points aka Michael Jordan. But sum will say the he was a small forward/guard. Small forward could be the back up for the shooting guard if he dose not have an open shot. This position the player is about 6'5 to 6'11.

Shooting guard (SG). A shooting guard speaks for its self. The player is usually the man who shoots the ball the most for the team. This player will be of about 6'0 - 6'6 usually shoots along way from the basket, maybe for a 3 pointer (explain later).

Point guard (PG). The point guard is the man that always has the ball to start off the play. They usually have good hands to dribble and pass with, the point guard will also shoot a lot for the team as he can see what is going on, and a good guard to watch is Allen Iverson. They can be from about 5'7 to 6'4.

There are a lot of rules but I'll go over some of the basic rules. The main rule what I think is most important is when the game begins, you have to tip the ball. This is where you have two players in the centre of the court and the ball is thrown up in the air and two players jump up in the air to catch or pass it to the point guard. As soon as the ball is bounced you have twenty four seconds to shoot the ball if you don't then the other team gets the ball. But you can shoot the ball miss and get the ball back and clock will go back to 24 secs again.

The second most important rule is that when you get the ball passed to you, you can start bouncing the ball but only with one hand at a time if you bounce it with two then you will get called for double dribble. Also when you have the ball and you are bouncing it you can stop with ball but you can't start bouncing it again then you would get called for a travelling foul. Also when you stop with ball you can pass (within 8 seconds) or the ball will get turned over, or you can head towards the basket and you have three steps before you have to realise the ball from your hands. Basketball is a none contract sport even though when you watch the game you may see a lot of contact. You can't ever grab a player push a player or trip a player or you will get called for a foul. When running to basket when you're trying to score you cant ever push a player out of the way, you probably get called for a foul. The only time really you can touch a player is when the player with the ball has the back to you can put your hands on there back.
Fouls- you can foul any other player 6 times (not 6 fouls per player). When you have 6 fouls to your name you have to leave the game. A technical foul is given if you start back chatting to the ref all the time or you through the ball at another player etc. a flagrant foul is when you have done something too bad for a normal foul and you get ejected from the game and can not return, e.g. hit a player, injure a player intentionally. If a player shoots the ball to the basket or lays it up you can only swat the ball away when the ball is in an upwards motion.
If you're the player that is getting fouled then you will be able to pass the ball in from the sideline, innless you were trying to shoot the ball then you would get a fee-throw. This is a line directly in front of the basket 15 feet away from it. And you get a free shot at the basket in less you missed the shot so you will get 2 go's
There are many more rules but I won't go over them all.

How to score points, most of points are 2 points for each time the ball goes into the basket. Or if you are behind the three point line (this is a kind of semi-circle with 21. something dimension around the basket).
You have a jump shot which can be from anywhere on the court, you just jump up in the air and release the ball towards the basket.
A lay-up is when you are to near to the basket to make a jump shot and would lay into the basket, either straight into it or off the back bored.
You can also dunk the basketball if you reach the rim. This is when you literally throw the ball right through the rim.

I would say something about the NBA and street ball but this is just about basketball in general.

Thnaks.

Summary: You have to try first

My 6 year old has a mini hoop and ball in his bedroom (the hoop is ont he abck of his door) and we are always hearing the ball thud after he sinks a basket :) His greatest joy over us laying a driveway later this summer is that he can practice dribbling a real ball and plans to ask santa for an outdoor hoop set. It's great excercise, that is for sure.
