Advantages: can help some people concentrate and work for longer

Disadvantages: your health.

Being a student, enery drinks are a common part of my life. When i have a deadline I will go down the shop and buy a few cans of Relentless in a vain attempt to become focused and work hard through the night.

Do they help me focus: Overall, I would have to say no. When i drink them i do not see a huge improvement in my concentration. Sometimes it makes me feel wierd if i have a bit too much. I can feel spacy and sometimes a bit trippy, but not in a nice way. It can make me feel sick and all this can actually lead to a decrease in concentration. Even though i know this can happen, I am still drawn to them.

Do the help me stay awake: The thing i find about these high caffeine drinks is that they dont make me feel awake, they simple prevent me from sleeping! If i have had a caffeine binge, and i try to go asleep, i can not. It can be very frustrating. leading me to be more tired the next day, resulting in me attempting to drink more caffeine to keep me alert.

My health: caffeine, the main active ingredient in energy drinks, has many recorded detrimental effects on health. A quick internet search let me see many, including increased heart rate, jitters, miscarriages if taken during pregnancy and even death if taken at high enough doses. caffeine, contrary to popular believe, is a drug, just as much as alcohol, heroin and cannabis are. It does have negative effects, and often they are a lot more detrimental than people realise. People often find it shocking that people die from using caffeine.

Addiction: I am currently addicted to caffeine. I get my "fix" from pepsi, coke and energy drinks. If i do not have caffeine i get cravings for it and when i try to quit i get head aches and feel tired and have a lack of concentration. is a very addictive drug, and while addiciton to caffeine isn't as bad as other drugs, it still is damaging. Many people consume caffeine daily, many people are unaware that they are addicted to it!

I think that energy drinks can have many negative effects on people. The worrying part is that anyone, of any age can get these powerful energy drinks. There was recently a case where a 13 year old boy nearly died by over dosing on caffeine. I think the fact that people do not see caffeine as a drug leads to many probelms, and the outright abuse of energy drinks.

While I am not suggesting that people should completely cease their use of caffeine, maybe an age limit should be applied, so only over 16/18 can buy these strong drinks.

Summary: A lot more dangerous than people realise

You can quit a caffeine addiction by doing 3 days cold turkey though! :)
