Advantages: Sugar!, Tastes nice
Disadvantages: linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences, animal experimentors
I like lucozade, my favourite being the flavour which comes in the pretty purple bottle, and whilst I know they don't have quite the same lightning effect as Red Bull and suchlike substances, I find the sugar rush can get painlessly me through more of my working day than I end up spending clock watching usually. The lemon flavour was also high on my list of soft drinks of choice, nice and light with that weird lucozade specific aftertaste that you just don't get with anything else. The trouble is, as I was walking through the town centre the other day, minding my own business, trawling though the high street shops, as I do on a regular basis, my attention was caught by an animal rights protester, with their requisite folding table covered with anti-animal experiment posters. So what does this have to do with Lucozade? Well, according to the literature that the geezer was so gleefully handing out, both Lucozade and Ribena are apparently tested on animals. I have no idea of how this is supposed to be done, my knowledge of experimental method is somewhat lacking. So, I decided to take a look at the various internet protest groups in the hope that they, quite honestly wouldn't be able to confirm this for me. I like Lucozade! And I have been rewarded for this persistance, its not Lucozade itself that is the culprit, however the company who manufactures it, Smithkline-Beecham, uses Huntingdon Life Sciences, a company whose name is apparently well known as a perpetrator of these heinous deeds. So, I'm still vetoing the whole Lucozade thing now, it may be a very tasty drink, but by buying this you're providing funding to a company whose moral standards are pretty loose, where our small furry friends are concerned anyway.

- 14/03/02 interesting! Sorry for the low rating, this was more a reflection of the fact that I didn't feel that you said enough about energy drinks, what they do or even about lucozade itself. Claire |
