BBC SnookerNewest Review: ... by 50-1 outsider, albeit the 7-times World Champion, Stephen Hendry. Again, it was great to see Stephen, past his best, holding his own against the leader of the future stars. However, a bigger shock was to come when the colossal favourite for a fourth World title, Ronnie O'Sullivan, was crushed by Mark Allen after leading 9-7 going into the final session. I think anyone who knocked out the ... more |

It's that time again! The 18th of April 2009 heralded the beginning of two glorious weeks of the Betfred World Snooker Championship. Unsuprisingly, the World Championship, held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, is the ultimate tournament in Snooker and worth double the ranking points of any of the other competitions. The winner will receive £250,000 prize money, but they will have to go through a marathon format of games, with the final being the best of 35 frames (aka first to 18). The 32 players that comprise the World Championship are the World's top 16, who get automatic admission, and 16 qualifiers - which give people who can be way outside of the ... The greatest mystery in sport is of course why hasn't Gareth Southgate been sacked yet, the second biggest being is why Steve Davis hasn't retired? The World Championship got under way in Sheffield in with the news that snooker had secured a betting company to sponsor the championship for the next three years on the same day the police had decided to investigate the rather blatant match fixing incident from last years British Open snooker championship when Stephen McGuire beat Rob Burnett 9-3, an unfortunate contradiction. Deliciously they were drawn to play each other in Sheffield in the first round, no doubt a 'Rosser' or two in the crowd to keep an eye. Peter ... Read the complete review

It's someway off being the UK's most popular sport, but snooker has been one of our most popular pasttimes for many many years. There are snooker clubs in every major town across the UK and beyond. Originally it was just a national sport but towards the end of the 20th Century it began to appeal to other countries, particularly in Asia. The BBC began showing coverage of snooker in the 1970s and that has continued to this day. From John Spencer's World Snooker Championships title in 1977 to Ding Jun Hui's UK Championship win in 2005, the BBC have covered every major tournament under the sun. The BBC currently provide coverage of the four ... Read the complete review

BBC are often criticised for their obvious lack of sports coverage. They have recently lost the rights to their prized possession, Match Of The Day to rival terrestrial channel ITV, as well as many other events ranging from Horse Racing to Golf. But there are signs that the channel is serious about it's sport, and that good times might be ahead. Starting from next season, the FA Cup will be shown on BBC, as will all of England's home internationals, friendly or otherwise. But that is just football, where are the other sports? Clearly BBC do not have the money that BSkyB has, but it does receive everyone's TV licence, so where is all of that going? Greg Dyke, ... Read the complete review

Do we really need snooker on our t.v's. I don't think that we do because it is the most boring thing that i have ever watched in my life nothing good seems to happen. All I can really see is the tobaco signs around the table and snooker players mainly smoking fags. Are these the things that the youth of today is meant to look up to. I don't think so I think that we should no longer have snooker on the t.v to bore us out of our minds and have something a bit more interesting. I think that a comedy or a sci-fi programme or something would be more suitable. Other wise put some other sport on like Ice hockey or skiing something with a bit of action and ...
