Who was it that decided to empty the entire contents of Ayrton Senna's briefcase out of a helicopter window? Gerhard Berger thats who! The last major Playboy and Joke of a chivalrous era before the sport became the major corporare circus that it is today. Gerhard came to Formula 1 in 1984 driving for the lowly ATS-BMW team. By 1984, the Turbo power that had powered BMW to the championship with Brabham had become old and tired and very heavy by modern standards. Gerhard Berger, since retiring from Formula 1 racing, has become the BMW head of motorsport, and this season he's played a kind of coaching role to the brilliant new british driver Jenson Button. I think that he's helped Button in many ways, but it's a shame he won't next season as Beneton have signed Button on a loan deal. In his time he was a very good driver, but rarely won races. He had very good drives for Ferrari, then Beneton both times along side team mate Jean Alesi. Although Berger was never an actual champion, I do believe he's one of the best characters in Formula one and motorsport as a whole. ...
