Recycling in most boroughs is compulsory. The government has told us that we must be recycling a minimum of 40 percent of our waste by 2011. If a borough does not reach its targets on recycling there will be heavy fines imposed on the borough which will reflect on the council tax. Fines of up to £1000 will be imposed on residents who persistently refuse to recycle. I am somebody who has decided that there are things that I can do to help the environment with the simplest one being to recycle when I can and so when I moved into my flat I got 3 bins for my kitchen with one for recycling of general items (plastics, paper, cardboard, etc), one for rubbish and one for glass recycling as I live beside a large supermarket who have recycling bins for general recycle, one for each glass colour, paper and also materials like clothing and shoes. I have found that since I began recycling over half of my waste is actually ok to recycle which has led to me needing to do a trip or two a week to the recycle centre but has led to me not ... Well they've finally arrived. Our new recycling bins, one blue and one brown, which means I can now recycle cardboard, plastic and cartons without having to drag them to the supermarket. This is great for me, I do try and be good and recycle as much as possible, but I have found trying to recycle some materials quite annoying. Cardboard is one of these. Mainly because it has been impossible to take it to the bins at the local supermarket since they all always overflowing. Therefore it has meant a special trip to the local tip, which when you have a toddler and a husband who hates going to the tip makes it near on impossible. However now I have my lovely bin I can ... Having watched documentaries about China, and been to the USA and experienced their recycling policies (or lack of), I'm virtually convinced that cleaning out my old marmite jars is utterly pointless, and that the world is more or less doomed unless the biggest industrial nations in the world actually decide to embrace the concept of finding new fuels, avoiding wasteage wherever possible, and recycling everything that can be recycled. To its credit, Salford City Council have stepped up their recycling programme over the past couple of years, and in addition to the local tip, and the recycling points that are dotted around the city in various supermarket car ... Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% for recycling, but have to admit I despaired when I saw yet another colour of wheelie bin being delivered on our driveway yesterday. We come under Stockport Council (Cheshire) but I don't have any experience of another borough so maybe our experience isn' the norm in the UK? I think we've probably been of the last people to have been given wheelie bins but the council seemed to have well made up for this as we now have 3 standing outside. However, we still have to put our everyday rubbish into sacks for collection. Bin no 1 - is green & is collected every 2 weeks & is always full of garden rubbish. Bin no 2 ...
