Advantages: helping environment

Disadvantages: bins get smelly

I must admit i was a little unsure when the council first told us we were having 3 bins instead of the one, as i find the wheelie bins very ugly, having said that im used to it now and find it quite usefull to be able to dispose of different types of rubbish, it doesnt load your bins up quite so much.

The one thing i do have a problem with though is that they are emptied fortnightly in my area and while we can get rid of food waste weekly by alternating it between brown and green bins, i find they still get smelly and although there is a bin cleaning service in my area i tend to clean mine myself as it costs £2.50 per bin and if you get them all cleaned you pay £5.00 as the third is free, but still cheeper to clean your own!!

I am a believer in recycling, i try to recycle everything that i possibly can but is difficult at times as i dont have a car, i normally wait until ive collected enough jars and bottles, which i store in my garage then load my bike up and take them all to the bottle bank, god knows what people think as im clattering up the street with my bike, but its worth it, any old material i have i rip up and use for cleaning cloths, my clothes, shoes and household knicknacks are recycled at various charity shops, yesterday i had a clear out and i took several bags of toys there to make room for this christmas installment!!

I recycle my carrier bags in charity shops too, as it saves them outlay in buying them they reuse them for their customers, and i now have bought the "green" bags that you get from local supermarkets and i find them so much easier as carrier bags are so flimsy and rip far too quickly these green bags are very strong, and will last me years.

I try to rip cardboard up into small pieces so they fit into my blue cardboard and paper bin, but i do wish stores wouldnt put quite so much packaging on their products, i find each christmas the toys are lost in so much of it, and it makes it harder to get the toys out, you need a tool kit just to unpack them!

I think that the council could improve their recycling facilities to make it simpler for everyone, hopefully in time they will, meanwhile i will continue doing my bit for the environment with my trusted bike.

Summary: every little bit helps.

Im with you that recycling isa good thing but you do feel its too expensive to run and the middle-class that do recycle will be the ones paying the collection tarriffs and fines..
