Boxing is definitely a sport, although most people can say its a few rounds of pure, brutal aggression. In fact in my own opinion I could easily call it an art rather then a sport. This is because boxing is all about skill, not on how much damage you can cause to your opponent. It takes lots of training to become skilled at this sport, yet on the other hand rugby and wrestling are equally as risky and dangerous.

On the other hand I could also say it WASN'T a sport. In the past when boxing was first discovered it consisted of no protection at all, no gloves, no head guard. Now a days full protection measures are constructed, making it safe. Back in the days when they only wore bandages on their hands and they fought the rounds until was opponent was down, and then I wouldn't class that as a sport, just brutality.

But there should be no reason why in the present boxing can be classed as a sport, it offers the same risks as most others, just in a different style. It is tough, it is punishing, but this is all down to the individual to decide upon. Also there are plenty of rules in boxing to make it fair and a safer sport, such as no blows below waistline, no elbows etc.

It has been included in the Olympics since the very beginning, making it extremely popular. Because of the risk, there is allocated doctors at ringside, and the amount of rounds now a days have been lowered and time shortened. When the risk of serious injury is looming, the fight is usually stopped.
