Advantages: No meat for a while.

Disadvantages: Healthy meat in the future.

Foot in Mouth:
I live mid-Northumberland and to date the the farms arround me are unaffected (typing this as i look for a peice of wook to touch). Even though there are farm to the North and South of me that have been affected, so i guess it is only a matter of time before the town is touch by this evil virus.

Surely the MAFF and the Government are fighting a losing battle against the virus, and it can travel hundreds of miles on the wind. I beleive that they are trying there best the get rid of this thing, but the question is: Is there best good enough?
Well i'm sorry Mr Blair and Mr Brown I don't think it is.

What Should We Do Now?
This may seen a very harsh and expensive thing to do, but it is fool proof, but i beleive that every cow, pig, goat, and sheep should be killed and burnt, this would also help kill off any ligering future BSE scare. Then the land should be disinfected and after 6 months only prime beasts should be bought from the USA or any other reliable source and a new british animal agriculure should be formed. I don't beleive that this will happen, but what the government should do is protect the wild and rare beasts, such as Chillingham White Cattle, which are wild, in Northumberland, in clean unit with filtered air until the crisis has passed and also zoo animals which could be affected should also be treated in such a way. I understand what i have just said will be expensive but surely in this counrty we deseve the best meat with no infections, and if the government spends quite a bit of money of the meat industry, i am sure public confidence in British meat will rise, and so will the price of beasts meaning the farmers should get more money.

The Statergy For The Future:
Every agricultural beast (Cow, Pig, Goat, Sheep) in the this country should be vaccinated against this desease, Also every beast sold either to the food industry or to other farmers should be checked and monitored, there
should also be a record to show where the beast came from and went too.

Some people are asking about the wild animals, there are not many wild animals who could be affected, as this desease only affects cloven hoofed animals, so Deer, Foxs, Horses, Squirals, Hedgehogs, Dogs, Cats will not be affected.

Sorry - should have said - the information below is from the MAFF site.

Your update is incorrect. Deer are cloven footed animals. The disease affects cattle, sheep, pigs and goats - plus hedgehogs, coypu, rats, deer and zoo animals including elephants.

Truly sorry for the NU rating - but...

For a start, are you proposing to kill off zoo animals too? What about wild deer? Hedgehogs?
Who pays for the mass slaughter? Who pays for the mass disinfection? Who pays to keep farmers and their families in the six months while their land is being disinfected and they can't make a living from it? Who pays compensation for the market value of the slaughtered animals? Who pays for the new stock to be imported? The government? The British Taxpayer?
Plus - as roguetrader1uk says - a vaccination is impractical. And you miss the important point that while farming is undeniably a business, the great majority of farmers actually care for their animals.
Sorry.
