Bullying is a major problem in schools all across the United Kingdom. Most bullying is triggered by something that makes the victim different (for example, glasses). There is still a large amount of bullying that happens for no apparant reason. In this review I will look at the main triggers as well as the many forms of bullying. I hope you find this review informative. If you think there is anything missing just tell me and I'll put it in as soon as I can!
WHAT IS BULLYING?
Bullying is where someone is treated differently or excluded. For many people, bullying means hitting or name calling but there is a lot more to it than just being called names.
WHO GETS BULLIED?
Normally the victim will have something that differs from everyone else. This could be a number of things. Many people get called "Four Eyes" if they wear glasses. Some people get called "fat" because they are slightly bigger than others. Childen who "smell" are often known as "Skanks" (I must admit, I have called a few people this before but I have since leart that all people should be treated equally). There are probably plenty more reasons for bullying but those are the main three at my school!
WHAT FORMS CAN BULLYING TAKE?
There are three forms of bullying. Physical, mental and social. Below are some more details on these.

Physical
If you are physically bullied, you will be hit, punched, kicked, nipped, slapped..... the list goes on and on! I know most members on this site will probably have been bullied as a child but most will not be physically bullied as an adult. In order for me to point out that physical bullying is a real problem, here is an example (this actually happened to me last year);
Bully: Give me your lunch money, NOW!
Victim (me): No.
Bully: NOW!
Victim: I need it.
*Bully punches victim hard in the stomach. Victim hands over lunch money.*
As you can see I tried to assert myself but I failed. The bully got what he wanted and I didn't get any lunch. Fortunatly I work closley with the depute head teacher on our school's charity and I ended up getting the bully suspended but a lot of pupils find it hard to talk to any teacher. A recent report issued by my head teacher stated: "We believe that only 5% of the bullying happening at this school is actually reported." This just shows you how bad the situation actually is. I'm getting into another topic now so lets move onto Mental Bullying.

Mental Bullying
Mental bullying is basically just verbal abuse. Have you ever heard the rhyme "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me?" Well name calling does cause a great amount of grief and missery. I don't know who made that rhyme up but they were either very stupid or very drunk!

Social Bullying
Finally, we come to social bullying. If you have been bullied socially then you have been excluded from a group or are just ignored. There isn't much else to say about this form of bullying because it's quite uncommon.

I hope you have learned something from this. Remeber, if your child (or you) are being bullied they should talk to someone they know and trust. Yesterday I was being bullied by a few people in my tutor group and I told my best friend. He then made me go to my guidance teacher and tell on the bullies. It might not be what you want to do, but friends will always do the right thing for you.

Summary: Bullying is a horrible thing. DON'T put up with it!!!

i totally agree with what you are saying, 'bullying is wrong'. im a student at a high school and i thought being a peer supporter was 'easy' but hearing their problems especially when it comes to bullying (that is why i decided to do some reserch), it hurt me alot. your're deffinitions, from what i have seen is accurate and your examples or fats which i am sure they are, are also accurate. i haven't been a victim of bullying but i know others arent so lucky, and i can assure you i dont stand up for it either. being bullied and concidered 'different' im guessing is not easy and i am sorry if anyone viewing this has been bullied it is wrong and i want you to know that what the bullies are doing or saying to you is very wrong. if you read this, i hope it helps. "Bullying in Schools: A major Problem" has shed some light on me, how it affects people negitively so i thank the person who wrote this. when i present this to my class, you would have indeed made atleast a difference. thank you

5% sounds about right, unfortunately. Thank you for sitting down and writing your perspective on the problem - as a parent I find it is all too easy to forget how hard school-life can be. Thankfully, after an horrific episode late last year which turned our lives upside-down, my son is willing to let me know when he has issues and has now joined the 5% :)
