Advantages: Great story to tell your friends, Fun, Once in a lifetime experience
Disadvantages: Could hurt your groin, Could hurt your back, Expensive
Tonight, it was the night of the May Ball. Tonight, it was a night of drunken debauchery had by many students in Aberystwyth. Tonight, it was the night I hurled myself off a 200ft crane in front of hundreds of people with two of my flatmates! Now that I've had a chance to sober up a bit, I am going to tell y'all about my fantastic insight into the world of bungee jumping! After 6 hours, I'm still on a euphoric (legal!) high and it feels great! The jump itself was organised by the university and only cost a paltry £25. From this specific company, it is usually £40 and their website can be found at http://www.bungee.co.uk. This is an even better deal than i have seen most places and I promise you, even if you're afraid of heights (of which I am), this will not only aid in conquering your fear, but will probably also make you want to do it again! Friends who do not want to perform the insane feat can also ride up with you in the crane for a small fee of £2. In my opinion, the ride up itself was kinda scary as you have a plethora of people watching and cheering you on. Once you throw caution to the wind and leap off, you're past caring! There is no pre-booking required and payment is made upfront. This is a better way to organise such an event due to the fact that if you book a jump, there's the possibility that there is bad weather when it comes down to it and you would have built yourself up for nothing. The feeling itself can only be described as absolutely liberating and fantastically amazing. Unless you have had the pleasure of experiencing this once in a lifetime opportunity, you have not yet lived! The views from the top of the crane were spectacular and the cool air was refreshing since I was sweating like a pig when I got to the top, as I was a bag of nerves!
>My friends still cannot believe I went through with it, however, they will be shocked when they check their e-mails tomorrow as simply had to prove myself and had my photo taken. Unfortunately, you need a pretty good camera if you want the moment immortalised as they [the company] do not provide souvenir shots. Bungee.co.uk has been established for a decade this year. They are the UK's only full time bungee jumping company and jumps generally run from February all the way to December. Holding at least 10 events per week up and down the country, the chances are that they may be holding one in your local area so keep your eyes peeled (and not screwed shut like mine just before the jump!). The cranes that they use are specifically used for bungee jumping and are staffed by experts who give you a quick tutorial on how to jump(!) They have also been certified by experts so you know that you're in safe hands. The only drawback is that for men, watch out for your manhood as you are strapped into a full body harness and the recoil can be a bit painful to your nether regions, but that is a risk you're going to have to be willing to take, and believe me, it's certainly worth it! It didn't happen to every single male before me, but I was rather unlucky! For the ladies out there, it goes without saying that you should wear trousers when taking part, however, it certainly was VERY funny watching the female students up here bungee jumping in cocktail dresses and pristine hair! Luckily, my female flatmate who also participated carried a pair of shorts in her handbag especially for the jump (she neglected to tie her hair though! Bless her). It was a bit worrying that you have to sign your life away on a form before the jump, as this is for insurance purposes. However, the company has insurance for £10million, which is the standard insura
nce cover required for this type of thing by many local authorities. Again, don't worry about this as it's all perfectly safe. As long as you are physically fit and are between 6 and 24 stone, you are able to take the plunge. Height is not an issue as I'm a pretty short lad myself. :-$ Bungee jumping holds pretty much the same restrictions as you would find on a roller coaster, that is to say that pregnant women, severe epileptics, heart problems et al are not allowed to take part. Age is not an issue, however, people under 17 require a parent or guardian with them on the day of the jump. Even the elderly can take part (I once had a chat with my old biology teacher at pre-GCSE and his 70 year old mother did one!) and rightly so! Why shouldn?t EVERYONE be allowed to experience the amazing thrill and sensation from hurling yourself off a 200ft crane?! Admittedly, I told a little white lie on the form and told them that I have had no previous back problems before, which is a blatant lie for those who know me on here as I sustained a not so minor back injury last year, but I was willing to put myself through the paces and go through it all over again. Lady luck was smiling on me tonight however, as I feel perfectly fine. But a word of warning, don't be stupid like me and make sure you either tell the truth or simply don't do it if you have a bad back. A good incentive would be to get yourself sponsored for charity because this will make you mega guilty should you decide to pull out at the last minute! Overall, I would definitely like to, nay, love to do this again!

- 22/05/03 Great op, mate!
I threw myself down a gorge in New Zealand. I almost sh*t myself and couldn't scream because I was that frightened. Over all though it was worth doing. As you intimated, you feel unbeatable for days afterwards.
I 9;m told that the odds of actually killing yourself on a bungee jump is 1 in 16,000. That makes it safer than juggling chainsaws.
But hey! Life's risky. Very risky. It's that risky that none of us are going to get out of it alive!
Once again, great op!
Cheers,
Joe

- 22/05/03 Wow - that must have been some rush. I went on some of the fairground rides at the ball - that was enough for me. I'd like to do a bungee some time. It was amusing watching people dive off in ball gowns and tuxedos! |
